Day 296 *Drug and substance abuse is not gender-specific. Women also abuse drugs*

It's very easy to conclude that the girl child is less likely be involved in drugs and alcohol than the boys counterparts simply because boys are perceived to get into trouble than girls.

But this narrative is untrue because have a high level of vulnerability to drugs and use of substance as they are more susceptible to peer pressure coupled with esteem issues.

When we make assumptions on the s*x that is in more danger or likely to get in bigger troubles, we have failed to proffer an all inclusive approach to solve the problem.

Day 276

*Economic Impact of drugs and substance abuse in relation to our health*

Drug and substance abuse causes great harm on public health and safety. Its effect on the economy is not something that can be overlooked as well. A person’s health is greatly affected by drug abuse and the impact of this is economically felt (Individually and collectively) in prevention and treatment costs, health-care and hospital costs, increased morbidity and mortality.

The treatment, education, intervention and rehabilitation process is resource-intensive and despite the allocated resources and funds nearly 40% of high-risk drug users who wanted treatment are unable to get it. Treatment of victims of drug-related crimes and accidents also takes it toll on our finances directly and indirectly.

Day 271

*Guard your heart with all diligence, your life depends on it - I*

Of the approximately 79 organs in the human body, the heart is one of the vital organ that is needed for survival. The heart pumps oxygenated blood throughout your body and receive deoxygenated blood back in return. This regular pumping of blood throughout the body supplies every part of the body with nutrients and oxygen, transports waste products to the kidneys and harmful materials (including metabolized and unused drug molecules) to the liver, which contributes to their removal from the body. This continuous activity in conjunction with other related activities contributes to keeping us alive.

However, consumption of harmful substances, particularly drugs and alcohol, may be associated with deterioration in the health of the heart and/or blood vessels. This is known as Cardiovascular disease, and it has considerable impacts on overall health and longevity. Cardiovascular diseases may result in brain abnormalities and damage, necrosis (tissue death), reduction in quality of life and death.

*Stats don't lie; At least 14.3 million Nigerians into drug abuse – EU Report*

The report of the National Drug Survey Use released in Abuja on weeks ago showed that the number of drug users in Nigeria is higher than the entire population of some European countries.

This places Nigeria among countries with high estimates of non-medical opioid use globally. While cannabis is the most widely used drug globally and in Nigeria, opioids are responsible for most of the negative health impacts of drug use.

This result provides the government and stakeholders with the baseline information needed for the design and implementation of effective prevention, treatment and continuation of care services that are evidence-based. Some of the findings are striking and alarming and call for concerted efforts to mitigate the negative consequences of this rising menace on the health, socio-economic and security of our nation

Day 139

*Examining the adverse effects of drug and alcohol abuse by an individual on other members of the family*

Every single person in an addict’s immediate family (and at times extended family) is affected in some way by the individual’s substance abuse. Addiction impacts a family’s finances, physical health and psychological wellbeing.

If young are a part of the family, their ages must also be factored into the effect of substance abuse. The same can be said for older who have adult children. The severity of addiction and the type of substance dependence also factor into the overall impact of on a

Though, it is impossible to assign a universal causal relationship between substance abuse and family functioning. It is worth noting that in most families, the impact of addiction is overwhelmingly negative, with few exceptions.

Suck and Die?!... An unpopular drug wrecking havoc in the northern cities of Nigeria

A locally mixed drug known as "Suck and Die" is gradually eating up the future generation of Kano indigenes who are into drug abuse for the temporal relief of their discomfort about life

Not only is this drug circulating very fast, its sale and widespread distribution has now served as a source of livelihood for most of the jobless citizens. Some say they take it due to their joblessness and lack of support from the state government
Others argue it provides them a soothing relief to depression and upgrades their mood to "highness"

Reasons for taking this substance in an excessive manner cannot be justified at all.

Day 64

Painful tales of drug abuse, depression, su***de and call for urgent action; NAFDAC DG raises concerns

It is estimated that everyday, over a 500,000 bottles of codeine are consumed by young Nigerians across the country, the same with the intake of to***co, Tramadol, Rohypnol, ma*****na, Benylin among other opioids, a worrisome and an alarming trend that has obviously eaten deep into the Nigerian fabric with children of all classes having a field day abusing and misusing these drugs.

Meanwhile, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) said it confiscated containers of tramadol with a street value of N193 billion for a year.

The DG, however, said the prevention of these dangerous drugs from entering into the Nigerian markets would protect millions of youths from hazards of drug abuse, misuse and addiction which can pose threat to families, Nigerian workforce and the security of the nation at large.

At 365_DAYS, we've come to realize that the fight against drug abuse is a fight for the future of Nigeria.
