Prof. Adaeze Oreh Commends Innovative Recycling Initiative, Highlights the Importance of Environmental Sustainability

Prof. Adaeze Chidinma Oreh has highlighted the importance of environmental sustainability following the successful upcycling of 4,000 used pure water sachets into customized throw pillows through the Single-Use Water Sachet Recovery Project, led by RIWAMA and HEY.

The initiative demonstrates how waste materials can be recovered, reused and transformed into useful products rather than discarded to pollute the environment.

At the opening ceremony of Rivers State Public Relations Week 2026, Prof. Adaeze Chidinma Oreh was recognized by the project team with a customized throw pillow made from recycled sachets, inspired by her contribution at the project's unveiling ceremony.

As the initiative prepares to expand to markets, schools and parks, it offers an encouraging example of how creativity and collective action can turn environmental challenges into practical, sustainable solutions.

A cleaner environment is a shared responsibility. Every effort to reduce waste and promote recycling brings us closer to a healthier and more sustainable future.

Prof. Adaeze Chidinma Oreh writes, "A woman's chances of surviving childbirth should never depend on where she lives, what she earns, or how quickly she can access a hospital.

"Yet, maternal health outcomes are shaped by much more than what happens in the delivery room.

"Access to quality healthcare, women's ability to make decisions about their health, the affordability of services, and the dignity with which they are treated all matter.

"In my research on maternal health in Nigeria, I highlight the need to look beyond medical interventions and address the wider barriers that put women's lives at risk.

"Improving maternal health requires stronger health systems, empowered women, engaged communities, and policies that translate into accessible, quality care.

"Because preventing maternal deaths is not just about saving lives during childbirth. It is about building a system that protects women at every stage of their maternal health journey."
