Today is Tuesday, the 5th of May 2026. It is 12 days to the World Hypertension Day, 2026 -17th May 2026
Why is hypertension (elevated blood pressure) so important as to be allocated a whole day in a year?
1. Hypertension is widely spread all over the world. In Nigeria, more than 1/3 of the population is hypertensive.
2. Because it has no easily identifiable causes/presentations, it is widely over looked.
3. The consequences of late discovery, inappropriate/inadequate treatment can be very serious.
4. These consequences include stroke, blindness, heart attack/failure. Kidney failure and even death.
5. Hypertension is controllable, especially when the population works with care givers.
Do not guess your blood pressure (BP). Check it.

World Hypertension Day- 17th May 2026.
The 17th of May every year is designated World Hypertension Day. It is a day set aside to draw attention to the fact that hypertension is a leading cardiovascular disease, with not very easily identifiable causative symptoms, very disturbing complications and of chronic span.
But before we explore more about hypertension, let's talk a bit about health in general
7th of April every year is designated World Health day. The essence of this day is to draw attention to the dissatisfactory condition of global health especially in climes as ours and to remark that better/ improved health can be achieved through improved nutrition, environmental sanitation, life style adjustment, prevention, early and appropriate treatment of diseases.
Tall order?
But it is quite achievable.

Sudden death syndrome.
But i saw him/her yesterday.
No sign/ complain of illhealth.
He/she was very much ok.
And this is happening more frequently these days. Usually, seemingly no warning signs.
So?
Take your general health seriously:
Genetics.
Nutrition.
Life style.
Health sanitation.
This is December!
