Polycystic Ovarian syndrome (PCOS) has been renamed Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS)

The change was announced in 2026 after years of international consultation involving endocrine and reproductive health organizations and patient groups. 

The reason for the rename is that many experts and patients felt “PCOS” was misleading because:
• many people with PCOS do not actually have ovarian cysts,
• the condition affects much more than the ovaries,
• it involves hormonal, metabolic, reproductive, and insulin-related issues.

The newer name tries to reflect that broader picture.
