COMMON MISTAKES MADE BY YOUNG MINISTERS WITH FEW MEMBERS

I have noticed that many ministries don't collapse because they lacked power. They collapse because they are ignorant. If your ministry is new, avoid these mistakes:

1. TRYING TO GROW TOO FAST

Many new ministries are obsessed with numbers, crowds and visibility. Growth is beautiful, but unhealthy growth can destroy a young ministry.
Some ministries want branches, media presence and large crowd before they even have stable structures, trained workers or even financial discipline.

2. PROMOTING PEOPLE TOO QUICKLY

One dangerous mistake is giving titles or positions before testing loyalty, maturity consistency and humility.

Some people are faithful for a few months and suddenly become leaders. Ministry leadership should not be based only on excitement or availability.

3. FIGHTING PEOPLE ONLINE

Some new ministries waste too much energy trying to defend themselves, argue, respond to critics, or prove points on social media.
Not every trending news deserves your attention. Not every attack deserves a response. Sometimes silence protects focus.

4. LACK OF FAITH IN THEIR UNIQUENESS

A ministry can lose its uniqueness by trying too hard to look like another ministry. Not every ministry is called to operate the same way.

You can admire grace without abandoning identity. Believe in your vision even if many people don't believe in it yet.

5. LACK OF MENTORSHIP

Many young ministries isolate themselves too early. Nobody can correct them. Nobody can advise them.
Isolation is dangerous in ministry. Even strong leaders need wise voices around them.

6. IGNORING THEIR FAMILIES

This is especially for the married. Some ministers sacrifice their homes while trying to grow their assignment.
A ministry that grows publicly while collapsing privately is not true success. Your spouse and children should not become victims of ministry.

CHURCH ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURE

Most people see a big church and think, “The pastor is just very anointed.”

That's what you think but those who have worked behind the scenes know the truth: prayer may bring people in, but structure helps keep them. The hidden part is what members don’t see.
The visitor records.
The follow-up calls.
The worker duty lists.
The department heads.
The service planning.
The leadership order.
The branch reporting.
The simple systems working quietly while everyone else is enjoying the service.
Without those things, growth can become a burden.

A church can have powerful worship session and still lose visitors. It can preach fire and still have confused workers. It can hold many programs and still remain stuck because nothing is properly arranged. That is why some churches look busy but never become strong.

A senior church worker in Port Harcourt once said something that stayed with me: “Our pastor was praying for increase, but the church had no basket to carry the harvest.”

What he later discovered was not a flashy trick. It was a hidden administrative structure — the kind growing churches use to organize people, train workers, follow up visitors, run departments, prepare for expansion, and protect long-term growth.

TEN STRATEGIES FOR ESTABLISHING A BRANCH OF YOUR MINISTRY ANYWHERE

One of the clearest signs that God is expanding your ministry is when His hand begins to move beyond your geography. Sons are raised in other cities. People are saved in territories you have never visited. The fire spreads.

But expansion without structure produces confusion. Here are TEN ways to establish a branch:

1. NEVER OPEN A BRANCH WITH HIRED PEOPLE

One common mistake in ministry expansion is poaching members from other churches to populate a new branch. Do not do it.
Let the branch start small and grow from genuine converts and Spirit-led transfers. A branch of ten people who are truly there by God's leading is stronger than a branch of sixty people who were recruited from other congregations.

2. HAVE A CLEAR VISION

Before you open a branch anywhere, ask yourself: Can I articulate what we are about in one clear sentence?
If you cannot define your vision, you cannot reproduce it. A branch is not just another meeting. It is a replication of identity. The vision in the headquarters must be the same vision in other branches.

3. RAISE MEN FIRST, NOT BRANCHES

The greatest mistake ministries make in expansion is sending someone they haven't raised.
A branch is only as strong as the leader carrying it. Before you open any new location, identify the man or woman God has prepared for that territory. They must have sat under your ministry long enough to carry the vision.

4. CONDUCT PROPHETIC AND STRATEGIC RESEARCH ON THE TERRITORY

Every territory has a spiritual climate. Every city has a history. Before you plant, pray about it.
Find out what is already happening in that city spiritually. Is there a gap this ministry is called to fill? Are there existing ministers you should relate with before you arrive?

5. MAKE ACCOUNTABILITY NON-NEGOTIABLE

There should be a report system for branch leaders.

Dear Pastor,

Since you began your church, you have been organizing miracle and prophetic services, attracting people who come to receive miracles and then eagerly await your next announcement for another guest preacher.

Despite spending money to host these prophetic figures who bless the congregation, your ministry still seems to be struggling.

■ No evangelism group
■ No leadership training
■ No prayer team
■ Your choir is still struggling
■ Your elders can't lead anyone to Christ
■ Your deacons are unaware of their responsibilities in the church

Please, sir, start taking your workers' meetings seriously, perhaps even more seriously than your Miracle Services.

Seek out preachers who possess the grace and experience to inspire and motivate people to action, and host them.

Many pastors fail to realize that in ministry, everything is not about fire, prophecy, and miracles.

Twenty committed members who carry your vision are more valuable than five hundred who attend because they see prophets on your posters.

If some pastors understood this, they would not have spent years entertaining members with fire and prophecy.

Yet, today, when they reflect, they find no one they can call a strong and committed member.

After posting pictures on Facebook of those who were touched by the power of the Holy Ghost, I hope you still have an evangelism team.

After sharing testimonies of prophetic confirmations, I hope they are not merely waiting for another program to return.

Men and women of God in ministry often boast about the number of attendees at Sunday services, but mature minds boast about the turnout at conferences and church workers' meetings. Don't pray for members; rather, pray for workers. That's why Jesus asked us to pray to the Lord of the Harvest to send laborers.

HOW TO PRESERVE YOUR CALLING

A calling from God is not preserved merely because it was genuinely received. Many people have received a clear assignment from God but later lost the strength, focus, character, and spiritual sensitivity required to carry that assignment to completion.
A calling must be protected, nurtured, developed, and faithfully stewarded.

Take the following points seriously:

1. PRESERVE YOUR WALK WITH GOD
Your calling must never become more important to you than your relationship with the One who called you.
Jesus said, “Abide in me, and I in you… for without me ye can do nothing. (John 15:4–5)
The greatest danger in ministry is becoming busy doing things for God while gradually becoming distant from God.
Protect your prayer life. Protect your study of Scripture. Protect your fellowship with the Holy Spirit. Your public ministry can never be stronger than your private walk with God.

2. PRESERVE YOUR CHARACTER
Your gift can open doors, but your character determines whether you can remain in those rooms.
“A bishop then must be blameless. (1 Timothy 3:2)
Never allow your calling to become an excuse for poor character. Guard yourself against pride, greed, sexual immorality, dishonesty, bitterness, and the desire for recognition.
A person may lose a position and recover it, but when credibility is destroyed, restoration can become extremely difficult.

3. PRESERVE YOUR SPIRITUAL SENSITIVITY
You must remain sensitive to the voice and leading of the Holy Spirit.
“As many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. (Romans 8:14)
Not every opportunity is your assignment, and not every open door is your door.
One of the ways people lose their calling is by becoming distracted by what God never told them to pursue.
Learn to distinguish between what is good and what is yours.

4. PRESERVE YOUR FOCUS
Your calling requires concentration.

POSITIONS AND TITLES ARE THE SILENT KILLERS OF TODAY'S CHURCH

We have replaced servanthood with status, and the desire to be seen has become stronger than the desire to serve. Yet when Jesus washed the disciples’ feet, He showed us that the highest calling in the Kingdom is not a title, but humility.

Many believers now chase positions more than purpose. People want to be called ‘Pastor,’ ‘Bishop,’ ‘Prophet,’ or ‘Apostle,’ but few want to carry the weight of responsibility, humility, prayer, and sacrifice that comes with it. A title without character is empty. A position without a heart for people becomes dangerous. When leadership becomes about pride instead of service, the church begins to suffocate.

The early church grew not because of titles, but because of unity, love, and humility. In Acts, they shared everything, prayed together, and served one another. There were no VIP seats—only people hungry for God. But today, positions have created competition, jealousy, division, and spiritual politics. Instead of building the Kingdom, many are building personal empires. Instead of lifting Christ, people are lifting their names.

Jesus warned us clearly: ‘Whoever wants to be great must be a servant (Mark 10:43). Greatness in the Kingdom is not measured by position, but by sacrifice. It’s not about being known, but making Christ known. It’s not about being honored, but honoring God. When the church returns to humility, love, and genuine service, the power of God will flow again—healing, restoring, and transforming lives.

Titles don’t change the world—character does. Positions don’t save souls—Jesus does.

5 SKILLS YOU NEED TO SURVIVE AND THRIVE IN MINISTRY AS A PASTOR'S WIFE

After some years of being a pastor’s wife, I have realised that loving God and being willing to serve are important, but they are not the only things you need in ministry.

There are certain skills you must intentionally develop because ministry will test you in places you never expected.

Here are 5 skills that have helped me tremendously:

1. THE SKILL OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

You will meet different kinds of people, hear different opinions and sometimes experience things that will hurt you.
You must learn to understand your emotions without allowing your emotions to control your reactions.
Not every irritation deserves a response.

2. THE SKILL OF COMMUNICATION

Learn how to say what you mean without being unnecessarily harsh.
Learn how to have difficult conversations without turning them into fights.
And please, learn how to communicate with your husband too. It’s very important, sometimes we talk without communication anything at all.
A lot of problems become bigger simply because people refuse to talk properly.

3. THE SKILL OF SETTING BOUNDARIES

You cannot be available to everybody, every time.
You can love people and still have boundaries.
You can be approachable without allowing everyone into your private life.
You can serve the church without allowing the church to consume your marriage, children, health and peace.

4. THE SKILL OF HANDLING CRITICISM

If you want to serve in ministry, you must develop thick skin and a soft heart at the same time.
Don’t allow every criticism to break you.
But don’t reject every correction either.
Learn to ask, “Is there something I can learn from this?”
Then take the lesson and leave the unnecessary noise behind.

5. THE SKILL OF KNOWING WHEN TO SPEAK AND WHEN TO KEEP QUIET

This one has saved me from many unnecessary battles.

TEN STRATEGIES TO PREVENT DISRESPECT AS A MINISTRY LEADER(S)

Respect is one of the most valuable currencies a leader carries. It takes years to build and can be lost in a single moment of foolishness.

Respect is not given because of your title. It is earned through your conduct. It is maintained through your consistency. Here is what I want you to learn:

1. KEEP TO YOUR WORDS AND PROMISES

The fastest way to lose respect is to say things you do not mean and promise things you do not keep.
When people discover that your word cannot be trusted, they stop taking you seriously even when you are saying something important. If you find yourself unable to keep your word for any reason, discuss the reasons behind it.

2. DON'T BE OVERLY AVAILABLE

When you are available to everyone at every minute for everything, people begin to treat you like a convenience. Set boundaries around your time, your space and your energy. Not out of pride but out of wisdom. What is always available is easily taken for granted by most people.

3. CARRY YOURSELF WITH DIGNITY

How you carry yourself tells people how to treat you. If you dress carelessly, speak carelessly and conduct yourself carelessly, people will handle you carelessly.
This does not mean you must be stiff or unapproachable. It means your speech, appearance and behavior should consistently reflect the weight of the assignment you carry.

4. MINGLE WITH THE GREAT

This is a profound way to be respected. People believe more in leaders who they see mingle with other great leaders they admire. Post the photos or videos of you with other great ministers of God.

5. DON'T LEAD FROM EMOTION

Emotional leadership is unstable leadership and it loses respect quickly. Train yourself to respond rather than react. When something angers you, take a moment to pause before speaking. When something excites you, consider carefully before taking action.

‎One of the biggest reasons people leave church isn't because they stopped loving God. It's because they stopped feeling like they mattered.

‎Think about it. Someone serves every Sunday, sings in the choir, ushers at the door, or works behind the scenes. Then one day they disappear... and weeks or even months go by without a single phone call, text, or visit. If nobody notices they're gone, that's not real family. That's just a crowd meeting in the same building.
‎
‎This is why so many people end up hurt and discouraged. Yes, people shouldn't let offense pull them away from Christ, but the church also has to be honest enough to admit that sometimes we fail people. We can't preach love from the pulpit and ignore people in the pews.

‎Have you noticed that many people who grew up in traditional churches can visit a Pentecostal church, receive healing, experience the power of the Holy Spirit, and still go back to their old church? A lot of the time it's because they know they're loved there. They know someone will notice if they don't show up. They know they're more than just another face in the crowd.

‎Some churches are full of powerful preaching, loud worship, speaking in tongues, and revival meetings. That's great. But if a member loses their job, gets sick, falls into a crisis, or disappears, and nobody checks on them, then something important is missing.

‎The church is supposed to be a family. Families don't leave each other to fight battles alone. They stand together. They pray together. They cry together. They help carry each other's load. Instead of blaming people for not having enough faith, we should be standing beside them with love, encouragement, and practical support.
