Body Mass Index (BMI)
The body mass index (BMI) is a measure that uses your height and weight to work out if your weight is healthy.
The results of a BMI measurement can give an idea about whether a person has the correct weight for their height.
BMI is a screening tool that can indicate whether a person is underweight or if they have a healthy weight, excess weight, or obesity. If a person’s BMI is outside of the healthy range, their health risks may increase significantly.
Implications of Overweight
Increased Risk of Type 11 diabetes
Increased Risk of High blood pressure
Increased Risk of Other Cardiovascular (heart) problems
Implications of Underweight
Increased Risk of malnutrition
Increased Risk of anemia
Increased Risk of Osteoporosis
To calculate an adult’s BMI: Divide their weight in kilograms (kg) by the square of their height in meters (m2)
BMI= Weight (kg) ÷ Height (m2)
Eg.Weight = 75kg
Height=. 5.8m
BMI= 75÷ (1.75*1.75)
=24.5 kg/m2 ( Normal weight)
