*NIGERIAN GOVT APPOINTS NEW GOVERNING BOARD MEMBERS FOR NURSING AND MIDWIFERY COUNCIL*
........May 24, 2026

The approval for the appointment of the NMCN Governing Board is said to be part of efforts to strengthen regulation of nursing education and professional practice in the country.

The Nigerian Government has approved the appointment of new Governing Board members for the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) amid the deepening issue of brain drain in the Nigerian health sector.

The approval for the appointment of the NMCN Governing Board is said to be part of efforts to strengthen regulation of nursing education and professional practice in the country.

The Council disclosed this in a public notice issued by its media team on Saturday, May 23, 2026, and signed by its Registrar/Chief Executive Officer, stating Dr. Ndagi Alhassan.

The NMCN said the appointments were made by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in line with the provisions of the Nursing and Midwifery (Registration, etc.) (Amendment) Act, 2022.

According to the Council, the newly appointed Governing Board members are expected to be formally inaugurated in June 2026.

“The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria wishes to inform the general public that the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has appointed members of the Governing Board of the Council in accordance with the provisions of the Nursing and Midwifery (Registration, etc.) (Amendment) Act, 2022,” the notice read.

The NMCN added that the official inauguration ceremony “is scheduled to take place in June, 2026 by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.”

The Council also congratulated the appointees, expressing confidence in their capacity to strengthen regulatory oversight of nursing education, training, and professional standards across Nigeria.

“The Council warmly congratulates the appointed members and remains confident that their wealth of experience and commitment will further strengthen the regulation and advancement of nursing education and practice in Nigeria,” the notice added.

The announcement comes at a time when Nigeria’s health sector continues to grapple with workforce shortages, migration of medical professionals abroad, and concerns over regulatory enforcement in healthcare training institutions.

The Ibom Nurses’ Forum strongly condemns the recent actions of officers of the EFCC within a hospital environment.

Hospitals and healthcare facilities are sacred healing zones driven by care, compassion, love, comfort, professionalism, and commitment to saving lives. They are not environments that should expose healthcare workers, patients, or their loved ones to fear, intimidation, risk, or threats to safety.

We urge all parties involved to exercise maximum caution and restraint, while ensuring the protection and safety of all staff, patients, and visitors within healthcare facilities. Professionalism, respect for human dignity, and adherence to due process must remain paramount in all engagements.

Furthermore, we call on the Government and relevant authorities to immediately launch a thorough investigation into the incident and take necessary steps to restore calm, confidence, and normalcy as quickly as possible.

The safety and wellbeing of patients and healthcare personnel must never be compromised under any circumstance.
