🌸 WOMEN’S HEALTH TALK 🌸

⚠️ IRREGULAR MENSTRUATION: WHAT EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW

Many women silently struggle with irregular menstruation and think it is “normal” or spiritual.

Sometimes, it may just be temporary.
But in some cases, it could be a sign that the body is trying to say something is wrong.

📌 WHAT IS IRREGULAR MENSTRUATION?

In simpler terms, a period may be called irregular if:

it comes too early or too late consistently

the cycle length keeps changing significantly

periods are absent for months

bleeding is unusually heavy or very scanty

bleeding lasts too long or too short a time

A commonly accepted definition is:

cycles occurring less than 21 days apart or more than 35 days apart

or cycles with unpredictable variation in timing.

Examples:

❌Seeing your period every 18 days

❌Seeing it every 2–3 months

❌Missing periods repeatedly

Bleeding unpredictably between periods

❌ unpredictable cycles every month

These are considered abnormal and may need evaluation as they may suggest irregular menstruation.

⚠️ COMMON CAUSES OF IRREGULAR MENSTRUATION

1️⃣ Stress
Emotional stress can affect hormones controlling your menstrual cycle.

2️⃣ Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS)
A very common hormonal condition associated with:

irregular periods

weight gain

acne

excessive hair growth

difficulty getting pregnant

3️⃣ Pregnancy
Sometimes missed periods may simply mean pregnancy.

4️⃣ Weight Changes
Sudden weight loss or excessive weight gain can affect menstruation.

5️⃣ Hormonal Imbalance
Problems involving thyroid hormones or reproductive hormones can disrupt periods.

6️⃣ Excessive Exercise
Very intense physical activity can affect ovulation and menstrual flow.

7️⃣ Certain Medications
Some drugs, especially hormonal medications, may affect the cycle.

🚨 WHEN SHOULD YOU TALK TO A DOCTOR?

Please seek medical attention if:

you miss periods repeatedly

your bleeding is excessively heavy

you bleed for many days

you have severe pain

you are trying to conceive without success

your cycles suddenly become abnormal

🩺 WHAT CAN WOMEN DO?

✅ Avoid self-medication
✅ Maintain healthy body weight
✅ Reduce stress
✅ Eat balanced meals
✅ Sleep properly
✅ Track your menstrual cycle
✅ Seek proper medical evaluation early

📱 You can use period tracking apps or a calendar to monitor:

cycle length

ovulation

symptoms

flow pattern

❤️ Dear woman, Irregular menstruation is common, but it should not always be ignored.

Early evaluation can help detect problems before they affect fertility, pregnancy, or overall health.

This afternoon in Antenatal Clinic, I was already tired from seeing many patients.

Then I picked up the next card and saw the patient’s name:

“Abraham Blessing.”

I don’t know why, but immediately I smiled and started singing softly:

🎶 “Abraham’s blessings are mine…” 🎶

Before I could stop myself, I was already clapping like we were in Sunday service 😂

Then the woman opened the door.

She looked at me… paused for a second… and joined me in singing.

Both of us laughed and sang together before she finally sat down.

But then she said something that changed my mood completely.

“Doctor, this is the first time I’m smiling today.”

Ah.

That touched me deeply.

Because many times in medicine, we are focused on blood pressure, scan results, drugs, and diagnosis…
We forget that some patients are carrying silent battles nobody can see.

Some are scared.
Some are exhausted.
Some are financially drained.
Some just need one moment to breathe again.

And today, all it took was one silly song and one genuine smile.

In that moment, clinic no longer felt like clinic.
It felt human.

Medicine heals.
But kindness heals too. ❤️
