For decades, our understanding of mental health has centred largely on the individual. Relational science is bringing another dimension into view: the role our relationships may play in psychological and physical health.
Research into human connection now spans neuroscience, social psychology, biological ageing and long-term studies of health and wellbeing, with growing attention being paid not only to social connection, but to the quality of our closest relationships.
This relational perspective is also entering psychedel!c research, where emerging studies are exploring emotional closeness, intimacy, shared experience and relational wellbeing.
Taken together, this work invites a broader consideration of where mental health begins and ends, and the place our relationships may hold within it.
Our latest article written exclusively for Beautiful Space by neuroscientist Tommaso Barba, PhD, explores the rise of relational science and what this developing field could mean for the future of mental health.
