What Does DNR Mean in Medical Terms?
You’ve probably heard healthcare professionals talk about a “DNR”, but what does it actually mean?
DNR stands for “Do Not Resuscitate.” It is a legal medical order instructing healthcare providers not to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or other life-saving measures if a patient’s breathing or heartbeat stops.
The order is made ahead of time by a patient or their designated surrogate decision-maker, often in consultation with a physician.
But here’s an important point: A DNR order is not a refusal of all medical treatment. Patients with a DNR continue to receive standard medical care, pain management, and comfort measures for their existing conditions; it specifically applies only when cardiac or respiratory arrest occurs.
Understanding DNR orders helps patients, families, and healthcare teams respect individual care preferences while ensuring clarity and dignity in critical moments.
