💚 September is NICU Awareness Month 💚

A time to recognise the challenges faced by premature and critically ill babies and their families worldwide, and to honour every clinician working to make it a little easier for them.

One group faces particular difficulties when it comes to monitoring: babies born before 27 weeks of gestation, whose skin is often too fragile for traditional adhesive electrodes.

Together with Amsterdam UMC and Máxima MC, we are running a study on the wireless Bambi Belt in exactly this population of extremely premature babies. A few months in, both hospitals have shared positive feedback on how the belt performs.

🔬 These are early results from an ongoing study, but they point to something we believe in deeply: even the most vulnerable babies deserve monitoring that doesn't add pain or stress to everything else they're already facing.

Researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) have uncovered a new clue to one of pregnancy's enduring mysteries: what determines when labor begins? In a study published in Science, the investigators found that a molecule best known for its role in cellular metabolism and aging also helps regulate the timing of labor. The presence of a parent next to their baby is not only beneficial for bonding but can also positively affect the baby's brain development. For example, a study has found that hearing their mother’s voice promotes the development of language pathways in a premature baby’s brain. This finding offers a potentially transformative way to approach neonatal care to promote better language outcomes in children born prematurely.



Premature babies who heard recordings of their mothers reading to them had more mature white matter in a key language area of the brain, a Stanford Medicine-led study found.
