"Plant protein is incomplete" is one of the most repeated claims in nutrition — a detailed amino acid analysis puts real numbers behind it.
Researchers analyzed 10 commercially available plant-based protein isolates — oat, lupin, wheat, h**p, microalgae, soy, brown rice, pea, corn, and potato — and compared their amino acid profiles against whey, milk, casein, and egg.
Every plant source came in lower on total essential amino acids than the animal sources tested (21–22% for oat, lupin, and wheat vs. 43% for whey). But here's the twist: corn had more leucine than milk, egg, or human muscle itself (13.5% vs. 9.0%, 7.0%, and 7.6%). So is corn secretly elite? No — quality is capped by a protein's scarcest amino acid, not its most abundant one, and corn's lysine sits at just 1.5%, well under what's needed. (Swipe to see the full comparison →)
Why the gap: animal proteins come from tissue structurally similar to human muscle, so their amino acid ratios line up closer to what we need — plants evolved theirs for other jobs. Each source has its own gap: corn, h**p, and brown rice are short on lysine (h**p also has the lowest leucine of any source, plant or animal); soy, microalgae, and pea are short on methionine; oat, lupin, and wheat fall short on both.
If you're plant-based, closing the gap comes down to variety: pair a lysine-strong source (soy, pea, microalgae) with a methionine-strong one (corn, h**p, brown rice), don't judge a source on one amino acid alone, lean on blended powders over single-source isolates, and eat more total protein if relying on just one plant source.
Caveat: this is a lab composition analysis, not a trial measuring muscle growth — it tells us what's in the protein, not how that plays out over months of training.
Takeaway: "incomplete" oversimplifies it, and so does ranking by a single amino acid. Plant proteins each have specific gaps — easy to close with variety, not a reason to write off plant protein altogether.
