💡Most people think that workplace ergonomics starts with a chair. If you spend hours sitting at your desk, you naturally want to sit comfortably and, more importantly, protect your back.
In practice, however, discomfort during lasting computer work often starts much earlier😮Discomfort arises from the smaller tools you use all day without really giving them much thought.
A mouse or touchpad that puts your wrist and fingers under too much strain without you realising it. 🐭
A screen positioned (far) too below eye level. 👀
A keyboard that causes you to tense your shoulders without realising it. ⌨️
These are small things that you often unconsciously take for granted. Yet it is these unconscious habits that can have a significant impact in the long term. They can cause wrist and neck complaints that – just like back pain – can make life quite miserable.
Ergonomic improvements therefore don’t always start with changing the entire office. Sometimes you can take an important first step towards a healthy workplace simply by changing a single item. Did you know that during an 8-hour working day, you pick up your mouse an average of 2,000 times and click it 4,000 to 7,000 times?😶 Every time, your wrist has to endure extra strain with a less-than-optimal mouse. A suitable vertical mouse is to your wrist what a comfortable chair is to your back.
And the interesting thing is: as soon as you notice the difference, you become aware of other discomforts, which you can do something about as well. Ergonomics doesn’t necessarily mean one major change. It usually involves many small adjustments that ultimately make sense for you personally!
