The heart and brain are in constant conversation, where information meets inspiration. โค๏ธ๐ง
We often think of the brain as the center of thought and the heart as the center of feeling. But physiologically, they are deeply interconnected.
A review on the heart-brain axis describes the heart and brain as an integrated, bidirectional system communicating through neural and hormonal pathways.
The heart receives signals through the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, involving messengers such as norepinephrine and acetylcholine. It also has its own intrinsic cardiac nervous system, a local neural network that helps fine-tune cardiac function.
And this communication goes both ways.
Cardiovascular disease can affect brain health, increasing the risk of cognitive decline and stroke. Conversely, neurological disorders can affect the heart through changes in autonomic regulation. Stress and emotions also influence this heart-brain relationship, making mind-body approaches an important area of therapeutic interest.
For me, this physiology has a beautiful parallel in the spiritual landscape. The brain can represent information, thought, and discernment. The heart can represent inspiration, feeling, and connection.
There is wisdom in tending to the brain-heart relationship. It is a lifelong journey.
Information + Inspiration.
Brain + Heart.
Science + Spirituality.
