Our assistant Mirella on expectations, questions you're afraid to ask, and 23 years of showing up for families.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝘆?
Most people expect pregnancy to feel like one long, beautiful moment. In reality, I see a lot of uncertainty and a lot of questions. That's completely normal — and it's exactly why we want parents to know we're always there, for all of it.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗸𝗻𝗲𝘄?
That no question is a stupid one. Complaints, worries, doubts — whatever it is, just ask. That's what we're here for. Always.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁?
"Is this allowed during pregnancy?" Food, drinks, exercise, medication — parents want to make sure they're making the right choices. Ask us. We'd rather answer a hundred small questions than have you worry alone.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸?
The connection with our clients and the team I get to work with every day. Before this, I spent 23 years in maternity care — in home care, a birth hotel, and the maternity ward at Maasstad Hospital. Now I get to experience a completely different side of pregnancy. That perspective makes this work feel extra special.
Building a real relationship with clients, guiding them through one of the most significant periods of their lives — and doing that alongside a team that genuinely supports each other. That's what gets me out of bed every morning.

𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴
The NIPT. You'll hear it mentioned early in your pregnancy and it's one of those things that comes with a lot of questions.
So here's what it is. The NIPT is a blood test that can be done from 11 weeks. It screens for chromosomal conditions like Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome and Patau syndrome. It's not a diagnostic test, it gives you a probability, not a certainty. If results come back high risk, further testing is always the next step.
It's also a choice. Not an obligation. Some women want to know. Some don't. Some are unsure until they're sitting in front of us.
At ELLE, we take the time to walk you through exactly what the test involves, what the results can and can't tell you, and what it would mean for you personally. No pressure in either direction. Just clear information so you can make the decision that's right for you, not anyone else.
Because that's what informed care actually looks like.

Everything we do is based on what you've told us matters to you, long before labour begins.
Pain relief at home or in hospital, we've got options. The birth TENS is always available. And whether you give birth in bed, in water, on a birth stool, at home or in hospital, we make it work.

Your birth. We're just there to make sure you feel safe in it.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁?
How strong women actually are. During birth, I see women do things they never thought they were capable of. That never gets old, not after all these years.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗸𝗻𝗲𝘄?
That the strength is already there. You don't have to find it or build it. You just have to trust it. Birth shows you what you're made of, every single time.

You don't have to do this perfectly. You and your baby are getting to know each other, step by step. You're probably doing much better than you think.

"Is this normal?" And most of the time, yes. Pregnancy brings so much that's new and unfamiliar. That's exactly why I want women to feel safe enough to ask absolutely everything.

Being part of one of the most extraordinary and vulnerable moments in someone's life. No two pregnancies are the same. No two families are the same. Every culture, every background, and yet we all share something so deeply human. That closeness never stops feeling like a privilege.
