Why is adequate IgG transfer critical in foals?⁠
⁠
Unlike many other species, horses do not transfer immunoglobulins across the placenta. This means foals are born without circulating antibodies, while their own immune system can take up to six months to fully mature.⁠
⁠
For protection during those vulnerable first months, timely intake of high-quality colostrum is essential. Within the first 24 hours of life, a foal should ingest at least 2 liters of good-quality colostrum to establish sufficient passive immunity.⁠
⁠
Despite this, failure of passive transfer (FPT) occurs in up to 25% of foals, significantly increasing the risk of infectious disease and neonatal complications.⁠
