Essential Chiropractic Statenkwartier Den Haag Patrick Pabouet: Chiropractor in Statenkwartier District of The Hague, Netherlands

My journey into chiropractic began in 2013 when I served as an assistant to a chiropractor, spanning across three countries - Panama, Netherlands, and the USA. Witnessing profound transformations in individuals' lives through regular chiropractic care, from chronic pain to emotional struggles, I observed how adjustments positively impacted their well-being, leading to enhanced health and vitality. I am looking forward to connecting with new clients to help support them on their health goals>

Moving to another country is exciting. New opportunities, new people, new experiences.

But your body doesn’t always see it as a holiday.

New routines, a different language, unfamiliar surroundings, changes in sleep, work, commuting and social connections all require your nervous system to adapt.

After 9 years of living in Den Haag, I’ve seen how that transition can sometimes show up physically: tight shoulders, jaw tension, poor sleep, headaches, digestive changes, or simply feeling “wired but tired.”

Your body isn’t failing. It’s adapting.

I wrote about what I’ve noticed in expats over the years—and why giving your body time and space to recover matters just as much as adapting to your new life.

If you’ve ever moved countries, you may recognise some of this.

If you are new here.. welcome to town!

Sad to hear the news about Dolly Parton’s recent passing,
She has many great quotes but I really enjoyed this one.

We spend a lot of time trying to control things we simply can’t: other people, circumstances, setbacks, changes, and sometimes just the direction life decides to take us.

What we can do is adjust. Change course when we need to. Slow down when necessary. Try a different approach. And keep moving forward.

That doesn’t mean everything will work out exactly as planned. It means we don’t have to be completely at the mercy of the wind.

Sometimes, a small adjustment is enough to change the direction you’re heading.

Stress doesn't just affect your mind—it shows up in your body too.

If your neck feels stiff, your shoulders are always tight, or you finish the day with a tension headache, your body may be responding to stress exactly as it's designed to. The problem is when that "protective" tension never switches off.
In my latest blog, I explain why this happens, what your nervous system has to do with it, and simple ways to help your body relax and move better.

“This morning, the sun endures past dawn. I realise that it is August: the summer's last stand.”
— Sara Baume

August has a different feeling.

The mornings start to soften, the evenings arrive a little earlier, and summer reminds us to slow down and appreciate the moments before the season changes.

Take the time to enjoy the last long days, breathe deeply, get outside, move your body, and make space for recovery.

Summer doesn't last forever—but the memories do.

"I think something's wrong with the adjustment..."

This week, I had a phone call from a patient who was understandably worried. A day or two after their adjustment, they had gone to the gym and noticed some unusual muscle aches and pains they hadn't experienced before.

After talking through what had happened, the explanation was actually reassuring.

When your body starts moving differently, muscles that haven't been working properly for months—or even years—often have to start doing their job again. Other muscles that have been overworking finally get a chance to relax. Add a workout into the mix, and it's not unusual to feel soreness in places you weren't expecting.

That doesn't automatically mean something has gone wrong. In many cases, it's simply your body adapting to a new way of moving.

Of course, not every ache or pain is normal, which is why I always encourage patients to call if they're concerned. I'd much rather answer a question early than have someone spend days worrying.

If you've ever wondered why you might feel a little worse before you feel better, I've written about it here:

Recovery isn't always a straight line—but understanding what's happening can make the process much less stressful.

"A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for."

Fifteen years ago, I lost the job I'd had since I was 18.
This year would have marked 30 years since I first walked into Waldenbooks (which later became Borders). (Yes... I really am that old!)
Instead, this year marks 15 years since Borders disappeared.

"Keep your face always toward the sunshine—and shadows will fall behind you."
— *Walt Whitman*

Life will always bring challenges. Stress, setbacks, and difficult days are part of being human.

But where we choose to place our focus matters.

When you focus on what you can do instead of what you can't, on progress instead of perfection, and on gratitude instead of frustration, your mind and body respond differently.

Keep moving forward, take care of your health, and remember that even small positive steps add up over time.

📅 We’re already halfway through the year!

Here's a quick reminder that could save you from missing out...

Many Dutch health insurance policies include chiropractic coverage, but every December I see the same thing happen.

Patients check their remaining benefits only to discover they still have **hundreds of euros** worth of chiropractic visits left.

The problem? By then, everyone is trying to book before the end of the year, and appointment availability becomes limited.

💡 If you have supplementary insurance, now is the perfect time to log in and check your remaining chiropractic allowance.

Don't wait until December to find out you've left your benefits unused.

Your health deserves more than a last-minute rush.

If you're not sure what your policy covers, send us a message—we're happy to help you figure it out.

🛏️ **What's the best pillow for neck pain?** The answer might surprise you.

One of the most common questions I get in the clinic is: *"What pillow do you recommend?"* Most people expect there to be one magical pillow that fixes neck pain, headaches, and poor sleep.

The truth? There probably isn't.

Your pillow matters, but your neck and spine health matter more. The goal isn't finding the "perfect" pillow—it's finding one that keeps your head and neck in a neutral position while you sleep. Research and chiropractic experts consistently agree that comfort, sleep position, and proper alignment are far more important than any specific brand.

In this week's blog, I break down:
✅ Why most neck problems aren't actually caused by your pillow
✅ How to choose the right pillow for your sleep position
✅ Why side sleepers and back sleepers need different support
✅ The pillow myth that keeps people searching for years

Before you spend another €100 on the latest "orthopedic miracle pillow," give this a read:
