i did classes with the theme of yamas and niyamas this week at Urban Life Health Centre.
those are the yogic commitments, morals, disciplines that ensure the progress on a spiritual path.
a lot of inspiring knowledge came to me during teaching, which i shared, about how to use yamas and niyamas for the practice of self-awareness.
yamas and niyamas is such a rich topic, we can practice them in every situation, in every moment.
for example, if we only take ahimsa, non-hurting, non-pushing, non-harming, non-violence, and practice only this, then all of the other yamas and niyamas will come into play as well.
non-pushing of the limits of the body in a yoga posture goes together with satya, truthfulness, towards yourself: when does doing effort (tapas) become pushing and harming, where is that subtle boundary?
asteya, non-stealing: am i stealing my inner peace from myself by allowing the disturbing thoughts that are not useful to pull my mind and attention into the dark holes unnecessarily?
brahmacharya, living in the constant awareness of the True Self: am i able to remember and to return to my true nature, which is peace and bliss, even in the middle of a very disturbing situation? can i be aware of that Truth within?
aparigraha, non-grasping: can i allow myself to stop grasping, stop holding all the muscular tension?
satya, purity: are my thoughts pure?
santosha, contentment: can i remain content always, whether i receive a compliment or a curse?
svadyaya, study of spiritual texts, goes together with ahimsa, non-hurting: does my truth hurt others? is the spiritual knowledge i studied from the scriptures connected to the heart when i communicate it?
ishvara pranidhana, surrendering to god: can i surrender to god the result of my efforts (tapas)? i can take good care of the fruit tree, but it may still give no fruits.
tapas, doing the conscious, burning effort: when is the effort useful? and when does it become himsa, hurting?
so tapas and ahimsa go together.
they all go together. and if we only practice one of them, we will practice all of them.
