This week, we celebrate the incredible Lọlá Ákínmádé Åkerström and her powerful new novel, Bitter Honey - a multigenerational story spanning four decades and three continents, from 1970s Gambia to present-day Sweden.
Lọlá is a Nigerian-born, Sweden-based storyteller, award-winning author, and photographer. She’s also the mind behind Due North, the bestselling LAGOM: The Swedish Secret of Living Well, and the critically acclaimed novels In Every Mirror She’s Black and Everything Is Not Enough.
In Bitter Honey, we meet Nancy, a young Gambian scholar who moves to Stockholm in 1978, and Tina, her daughter, who years later unearths family secrets long buried.
Their story is one of silence, resilience, longing, and ultimately, healing.
This novel is as tender as it is fierce. A lyrical call for empathy. A love letter to mothers and daughters.
