Picterus PICTERUS® JAUNDICE PRO
A jaundice screening device approved for clinical use by healthcare professionals and caregivers. 🌐 picterus.com 📩 [email protected]

Picterus develops and distributes a smartphone app that can diagnose jaundice in newborns. Worldwide, 114,000 children die unnecessarily from jaundice every year. In addition, jaundice complicates and creates extra stress for parents as they have to go back and forth to the hospital just to keep their child's jaundice levels under control. Our app will help solve both of these problems, as we are developing the world's first low-cost diagnostic tool for jaundice that works on all skin types.

📢 New research shows parents can successfully use Picterus Jaundice Pro to screen newborns for jaundice at home. In a study of 123 parents, the app received high usability ratings, with parents describing it as easy, quick, and convenient to use. Nearly 88% said they would use it at home, and both parents and nurses highlighted its potential to support early identification of babies who may need further assessment. 👶📱

📢 Proud to share our new paper on implementing Picterus Jaundice Pro, a smartphone-based tool for neonatal jaundice screening, in Mexico.

Neonatal jaundice is common, but missing severe cases can have serious consequences.

In this mixed-methods RCT feasibility study, our Medical Advisor Gabriela Jiménez Díaz, MD, PhD, together with an amazing multidisciplinary team, shows that integrating a smartphone-based tool into routine care improves detection, referral, and access to treatment in a real-world, resource-limited setting, bringing us one step closer to more equitable newborn care. 🌍💛

What happens when digital innovation meets frontline newborn care? 👶📱

Together with The Wellbeing Foundation Africa (WBFA, Wellbeing Foundation Africa ) and in collaboration with Picterus Newborn Health, Project Oscar is bringing digital jaundice screening to healthcare facilities and communities across Nigeria. The results from the Project Oscar pilot are in and they're encouraging.

After 766 Picterus screenings across 636 newborns, healthcare workers reported*:
• Increased clinical confidence (100%)
• High user satisfaction (96%)
• Improved efficiency (79%)
*Based on post-project survey responses from 24 healthcare workers, complemented by qualitative feedback from a lead Digital Midwife and key WBFA informants

These findings highlight the potential of integrating non-invasive jaundice screening into routine newborn care, supporting earlier detection and timely intervention for newborns at risk.

A heartfelt thank you to the healthcare workers, midwives, and WBFA team making this project possible. 💛

We look forward to expanding screening across more facilities and communities in the next phase of Project Oscar.

Led by The Wellbeing Foundation Africa, Project Oscar demonstrates how digital health solutions can support earlier detection of neonatal jaundice and strengthen newborn care in underserved settings.

New Collaboration in Zambia - For Every Newborn.

Leaders from the , healthcare professionals, clinic representatives, and health stakeholders came together in Lusaka last month for a dissemination event hosted by the Healthcare Federation of Zambia in collaboration with and Teledoctor Teledoctor Zambia showcasing our smartphone-based neonatal jaundice screening solution and findings from our Picterus Newborn Health Non-Profit Kapiri District Jaundice project.

The event brought together 30+ participants to explore how Picterus supports neonatal jaundice screening across both facility and home settings, while enabling remote access to results for timely follow-up and care.

Findings from the Kapiri project highlighted the real potential of digital health innovation to strengthen neonatal care and improve access to early jaundice screening.

It was energising to see so many stakeholders aligned around a shared goal: giving every Zambian newborn a healthier start in life.

🌍 Update

Sarah and Gabriela, from our non-profit have just returned from Zambia, and the visit left us more motivated than ever.

At Kapiri District Hospital and the surrounding rural clinics, we saw a wall covered with photos of babies alongside their names, birth weights, and survival stories. Seeing those stories gathered in one place was a powerful reminder of why early jaundice screening matters and of the lives already being impacted through this work.

Thanks to the dedication of the healthcare workers at Kapiri District Hospital and the continued collaboration with local clinics and communities, jaundice screening is becoming an integrated part of routine newborn care. Awareness is growing among families and healthcare workers alike that jaundice can be treated when detected early.

As the project continues to expand, we look forward to supporting even more healthcare workers and increasing access to early newborn screening across the district. Each child screened brings us one step closer to a future where no baby suffers the consequences of undetected jaundice and where every newborn has the opportunity to thrive.

✨ We are just getting started.

💡 In a recent post, we shared insights on what neonatal jaundice is and when it appears.
But awareness doesn’t stop there. Some babies need more than monitoring.

👉 Here are a few important things to know about screening, treatment, and why early detection matters:

🔸10% of jaundiced babies need treatment
🔸if left untreated, severe jaundice can lead to hearing loss, brain damage, and even death
🔸severe consequences of jaundice are preventable by early screening, timely detection and correct treatment
🔸phototherapy, which uses blue light to help break down bilirubin, is a treatment method for severe jaundice

📣 Raising awareness saves lives.
Share this post to help others understand the importance of screening and timely care.
