The Invisible and Bitter Reality of Being a Doctor’s Wife
[Please keep me anonymous]
I am here to lighten the burden in my heart and express my pain. People think that marrying a doctor means living a luxurious life with endless respect and comfort. But the reality is exactly the opposite. Today, my heart feels shattered.
A few weeks ago, a deeply heartbreaking incident happened in front of my husband, who is a pediatrician/neonatologist. A small baby was fighting for life on a ventilator. An extremely expensive medicine was urgently needed to save the child. We all know how low doctors’ salaries are, but after seeing the helpless condition and desperation of the baby’s mother, my husband simply could not remain silent.
We gathered money from our own family members to help them. We bought three vials of medicine costing around NPR 75,000 and even provided travel expenses to the mother from our own pocket. We did everything we possibly could within our capacity.
But unfortunately, the baby’s condition had already become too critical, and the child could not be saved.
And what did we receive in return for our selfless help? Today, that same mother calls my husband and abuses him, insults him, and threatens to have him jailed by the police. We know that neither my husband nor his team made any mistake, and legally he is innocent. But these constant threats and humiliating words have mentally broken him.
Watching all this makes me question this profession itself.
Doctors are paid extremely low salaries, and even those salaries are rarely paid on time. The workload is unbearable. In NICU and PICU wards, they spend sleepless nights caring for critically ill children, while their own physical and mental health slowly falls apart.
There is neither security nor gratitude. Even after emptying your own pocket to try to save someone’s child, you are repaid with threats and abuse?
Seeing my husband suffer like this, and hearing similar stories from his colleagues, makes my heart ache. Parents sacrifice everything to make their children doctors. They spend millions on education — but for what?
There is no respect, no security, and not even timely salaries.
We have to think twice before fulfilling even basic family needs. Yet society treats doctors like gods and expects them to work endlessly, selflessly, and often for free. Living with this suffocating pressure has become incredibly difficult.
Thank you for listening to my feelings. I only wished that the world could understand the hidden pain behind that white coat.
