Sciatica isn’t “just back pain”
Pain shoots down one leg.
Your foot tingles.
Your calf burns.
You try to tie your shoes and wince.
That’s not a tight muscle.
That’s often sciatic nerve irritation.
Here’s what sciatica means.
You have five lumbar nerves in your lower back.
Those five join into one large nerve.
It’s called the sciatic nerve.
When one of those nerves gets irritated, pain travels down your leg.
Common signs include:
⚡ Shooting pain from low back to foot
🔥 Burning pain in the leg
🦶 Numbness or tingling
🚶 Muscle weakness when walking
🛌 Pain that disrupts sleep
How bad is it?
Use a 0 to 10 scale.
0 out of 10 means no pain.
5 out of 10 means moderate pain. Daily tasks start to suffer.
10 out of 10 means you struggle to walk, bend, or sleep.
If your pain sits between 5 and 10, see a physician, chiropractor, or physical therapist.
If pain hits both legs, go to the ER or call 911.
Most cases improve with simple steps at home.
Start here:
🧘 Piriformis stretch
🏃 Runner’s lunge stretch
🧍 Cobra stretch
Spend 1 to 2 minutes on the stretch.
Repeat 5 to 6 times a day.
Pick the one that eases your symptoms and focus on it.
Add:
🧊 Ice on the lower back
💊 Over-the-counter pain relief
🩹 Lidocaine patches
Avoid positions that worsen pain.
Give home care 72 hours.
If pain stays the same or gets worse, book an appointment.
Sciatic pain affects a large number of adults at some point in life.
The key question is simple:
Are you treating it early, or waiting until you struggle to walk?
If you’ve dealt with sciatic pain before, what helped you most?
