Extra protection for our littlest: Free flu vaccines now available for under 5s

From today, all children aged 6 months up to their fifth birthday can get a free influenza (flu) vaccine.

This change comes as flu continues to cause high rates of illness and hospitalisations in young children this season, with children under five experiencing some of the highest rates of flu-related hospital care.

The flu season started later than usual and is expected to continue, so it's not too late to get vaccinated. The current flu vaccine is also a good match for the flu virus circulating most widely this year.

✅ Free for all children aged 6 months to under 5 years, pregnant women, and people aged 65+
✅ Helps protect against serious illness
✅ Helps protect your family and community.

The flu vaccine is also free for many people with certain medical conditions.

Book at bookmyvaccine.nz or contact your GP, pharmacy, Hauora Māori provider, Pacific health provider, or local immunisation clinic. Many providers also offer walk-in appointments.

🌿 TE MARAMATAKA — WEEK AHEAD

17–23 August 2026

A week that begins with the calmer energy of Ouenuku and Okoro, before moving into the shifting and sometimes heightened Tamatea phases. By Sunday, Ari brings us back toward greater balance and steadiness.

Use the maramataka as a guide alongside your own observations of your tinana, whānau, whenua and taiao.

Rāhina 17 August — OUENUKU

🌿 Energy Levels: Calm, balanced and steady. A gentle energy for making progress without rushing or pushing yourself too hard.

🎣 Fishing: A reasonable day for fishing if conditions are settled. Take your cues from Tangaroa, the tides and weather.

🌱 Rongoā Harvesting: A good day for gentle harvesting. Gather only what is needed, with karakia, intention and care for the mauri of the rākau.

🥬 Māra Kai: Well suited to lighter mahi in the māra — weeding, checking plants, preparing beds and tending rather than undertaking anything too strenuous.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Whānau Dynamics: Supportive energy for kōrero, reconnecting and spending quiet time together. A good day to listen as much as we speak.

💼 Mahi: Steady progress. Work through your priorities methodically rather than trying to accomplish everything at once.

Rātū 18 August — OKORO

🌿 Energy Levels: Energy begins to build and may feel more purposeful. Motivation can increase, but maintain a sustainable pace.

🎣 Fishing: Conditions may be favourable depending on tides, weather and local observations. A good day to prepare gear or head out if the taiao supports it.

🌱 Rongoā Harvesting: A suitable harvesting day, particularly when you have a clear purpose for what you are gathering. Harvest mindfully and give back to the whenua.

🥬 Māra Kai: Productive energy for planting, tending, clearing and preparing the māra for new growth.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Whānau Dynamics: A good day for shared mahi and collective goals. Whānau may feel more motivated to get things moving.

💼 Mahi: Productive, forward-moving energy. Prioritise mahi that requires momentum, planning and action.

Rāapa 19 August — TAMATEA-KAIARIKI

🌿 Energy Levels: Energy becomes more unsettled and changeable. You may feel productive one moment and depleted the next. Pace yourself.

🎣 Fishing: Take extra care. Tamatea phases can bring unpredictable conditions, so observe the weather, tides and water closely before heading out.

🌱 Rongoā Harvesting: Harvest selectively rather than extensively. If the weather or your own energy feels unsettled, leave the rākau for another day.

🥬 Māra Kai: Focus on maintenance, checking, tidying and smaller jobs. Be responsive to changing weather.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Whānau Dynamics: Emotions may fluctuate more easily. Give one another space and avoid turning small misunderstandings into bigger kaupapa.

💼 Mahi: Keep some flexibility in your plans. Allow room for interruptions, changing priorities and unexpected demands.

Rāpare 20 August — TAMATEA-ANGAANGA

🌿 Energy Levels: Highly restless and draining energy. You may feel mentally busy while your tinana struggles to keep up. Ground yourself and slow your pace.

🎣 Fishing: Not a day to take unnecessary risks. Conditions can change quickly during Tamatea; prioritise safety and local knowledge.

🌱 Rongoā Harvesting: Consider postponing harvesting if conditions feel unsettled. Instead, sort, prepare or replenish the rongoā you already have.

🥬 Māra Kai: Keep mahi light. Observe what needs attention rather than pushing through large physical jobs.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Whānau Dynamics: Patience is important. Irritability, tiredness or heightened emotions can affect our interactions. Choose your battles and make room for rest.

💼 Mahi: Avoid overloading yourself. Attend to what genuinely needs to be completed and leave non-urgent mahi for another day.

Rāmere 21 August — TAMATEA-AIO

🌿 Energy Levels: The intensity begins to soften. This is a more sensitive phase that encourages slowing down, restoring and finding your centre again.

🎣 Fishing: Continue to observe conditions carefully. If the wai is settled and local indicators are favourable, gentle fishing may be considered.

🌱 Rongoā Harvesting: Better suited to quiet, intentional harvesting rather than gathering large amounts. Take time to connect with the rākau and whenua.

🥬 Māra Kai: Gentle tending, watering, checking growth and light maintenance are well suited to today’s energy.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Whānau Dynamics: Softer energy for reconnecting after potentially challenging days. Make space for manaakitanga, listening and aroha.

💼 Mahi: Begin winding down. Complete smaller tasks, organise your space and avoid carrying unnecessary mahi into the weekend.

Rāhoroi 22 August — TAMATEA-WHAKAPAU

🌿 Energy Levels: Energy can feel worn down after the Tamatea phases. Replenishment is important today — physically, emotionally and spiritually.

🎣 Fishing: Continue to be guided by local conditions. If heading out, keep expectations gentle rather than forcing productivity.

🌱 Rongoā Harvesting: Consider whether harvesting is actually necessary today. It may be a better time to prepare rongoā, replenish your kete or spend time learning from the ngahere without taking anything.

🥬 Māra Kai: Restore rather than exhaust yourself. Small maintenance jobs, composting, mulching and planning can be enough.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Whānau Dynamics: A good time to replenish relationships through kai, kōrero and simply being together. Avoid filling every moment with activity.

💼 Mahi: Finish what needs finishing, then allow yourself to switch off. Not every unfinished task needs to follow you home.

Rātapu 23 August — ARI

🌿 Energy Levels: More balanced and steady. After the changing Tamatea energy, Ari can bring a welcome sense of clarity and equilibrium.

🎣 Fishing: A more settled day to consider fishing, guided as always by tides, weather, location and your own observations.

🌱 Rongoā Harvesting: A favourable day for mindful harvesting and replenishing what is needed. Take only enough and acknowledge the mauri of the rākau and whenua.

🥬 Māra Kai: Good balanced energy for tending the māra, preparing for the week ahead and completing jobs that have been waiting.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Whānau Dynamics: Supportive energy for whānau connection, shared kai, whakawhanaungatanga and restoring balance within the kāinga.

💼 Mahi: A good day for gentle preparation and planning. Reflect on the week that has passed and set your intentions for the one ahead.

Maramataka is something we observe. Notice your own energy, the behaviour of your whānau, the whenua, ngā manu, and the changing weather. Over time, these observations deepen our relationship with the rhythms of te taiao.
