Hemp & Co

Hemp & Co At Hemp & Co, we believe food is medicine. Hemp and Co.'s creation was one of those serendipitous collisions of fate, chance and timing.

Through our brand 'Essential Eats', we offer nutrient-rich hemp foods packed with essential fats & amino acids to support your health, energy, and wellness—one delicious, whole-food meal at a time. It all started in March 2019. I was looking to diversify my sports massage business by providing products. While researching for ingredients I stumbled across hemp. I found a research paper praising the

benefits of hempseed oil for the skin, especially dry, flaky, eczema skin. Being post-menopausal my skin had become very dry and cracked so I started taking 2 tablespoons of hempseed oil a day. It had a profound effect on my dry hands, I no longer felt compelled to regularly apply hand lotion. More amazing than this, I begun feeling my digestion improve, my energy was balanced, and the pain in my right shoulder (which I had suffered with for years) was gone! I was converted and excited. I couldn't stop raving about this powerful plant. I told my family and friends about hemp so they could experience the incredible benefits for themselves. And so my small idea to add products to my massage business has grown into endless and exciting possibilities of what I can create through Hemp & Co.

We know essential fats must come from food—but how much do we actually need?

The FAO* estimates that, for adults, at least 2.5% of dietary energy should come from linoleic acid (LA) and 0.5% from alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) to prevent deficiency symptoms.

For someone consuming around 2,000 calories a day, that equates to approximately 5.6 g of LA and 1.1 g of ALA.

Percentages of dietary energy aren’t particularly easy to measure at the kitchen bench. A tablespoon of h**p seed oil is a simple, practical way to include both essential fats in your daily diet.

Individual requirements vary with energy needs, age and life stage—and other foods also contribute to daily intake.

Want to take your plated salmon from everyday dinner to five-star presentation?

Finish it with a sprinkle of h**p hearts. They add a touch of texture, a mild nutty flavour and, most importantly here, that 'someone rather clever plated this' look.

Sometimes the smallest ingredient makes the biggest finishing touch.

Why are some fats called essential?

Our bodies can make many of the fats they need—but they cannot make the two essential fatty acids: linoleic acid (LA), an omega-6 fat, and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 fat.

That means both must come from the foods we eat.

H**p seed oil and h**p hearts naturally provide both LA and ALA, making them a simple way to include essential fats in an everyday diet.

“Essential” doesn’t mean more is always better. It means our bodies need them and depend on our diet to supply them.

My granddaughter loves this toasted muesli so much that she asked me to make her a jar for her seventh birthday. That may be the best review one of my recipes has ever received!

This homemade muesli is made with h**p seed oil—one simple way our family enjoys essential fats as part of an everyday breakfast.

And yes, you really can use h**p seed oil for toasted muesli. Ours has been independently tested for oven cooking at temperatures up to 190°C.

What do essential fats have to do with dry skin?

Years ago, I began including a tablespoon of h**p seed oil in my diet each day. Over time, I noticed I no longer needed hand cream after washing my hands—and I haven’t used it in years.

I wasn’t diagnosed with an essential fatty-acid deficiency, so I can’t say for certain why my skin changed. But the science offers an interesting possible explanation.

Linoleic acid—an essential omega-6 fat—plays an important role in ceramide synthesis and maintaining the skin’s barrier against water loss. H**p seed oil is naturally rich in linoleic acid.

Sometimes the effects of nutrition can show up in unexpected places.

I accidentally shared this post last month without the carousel 😅

So here’s the full context behind the discussion.

Seed oils and ultra-processed foods are often talked about as though they’re the same thing — but nutrition science is rarely that simple.

When people say “omega-3”, they often make it sound like there’s only one.

But omega-3 is actually a family of fatty acids — including ALA, SDA, EPA and DHA.

Compared with many common plant foods, h**p seeds provide generous levels of ALA — the essential plant-based omega-3.

Tiny nutrition lesson. Slightly dramatic omega-3 reveal. 😄

Your skin’s barrier relies on essential fats.

Did you know **omega-6 is the most abundant essential fat in the skin**? It plays an important role in supporting skin moisture and barrier function.

H**p seed oil naturally contains omega-6 fatty acids, including **linoleic acid** — plus arachidonic acid (AA), the second most abundant PUFA found in skin.

Research has also explored the role of essential fats in skin repair, while h**p seed oil is often described as **non-comedogenic**, meaning it’s less likely to clog pores.

Food for thought: what we eat can influence more than just our internal health.
