A dowager’s hump is just one of the many conditions that can occur if we don’t have optimal alignment of our body. This can lead to an unsightly and painful condition. Many women are familiar with this hump and have concerns they will end up buckled over looking at the ground with a pack on their shoulders. This also happens to men. Quite often friends and family can be more aware of the hump than the person themselves. In medical terms, the dowager’s hump is called hyperkyphosis.
It is an increase in the forward curvature of the spine – usually in the lower neck and upper back areas where spinal joints have glided forward and have got stuck there. Symptoms – Poor quality breathing – Neck, shoulder and arm pain – Nerve impingement – Headaches – Continual strain to muscles ligaments and joints
How it occurs: Lack of awareness of correct body position and weakness in the upper back and core muscles allowing the body to collapse. When the head is sitting forward of the upper back over time the body builds up a fatty deposit to try to stabilize the weight of the head, which becomes the hump.
What can be done?
The optimal position for the head is directly on top of the shoulders. The ear should be in line with the shoulder, or the cheekbone in line with the color bone. The neck and the internal stability system needs to be strong enough to support the head in position as we sit at work, run around and play sports or do general chores. Rather than the regular cues of pulling your shoulders back, try lifting your chest to come into a more optimal position. At Posturefit we have helped many people reduce or rid their hump with specific postural correction exercises and awareness. It takes a bit of time but the rewards are many

TEAM EFFORT

A lot of clients are not very keen on having they're “before” photos on line. But Dave doesn’t mind. Before visiting the studio 18 months ago, Dave was training at a gym 4 to 5 times a week but kept experiencing neck pain and migraine headaches. The source of the pain was found to be his misaligned body. With a combination of myofascial stretching, ELDOAs, and corrective strength training, Dave was able to improve his posture and alleviate his pain. Do you know how to stretch your piriformis?

The piriformis is just one of many muscles, fascial structures and connective tissues that influence the position and function of the pelvis.

As you try this myofascial stretch, notice whether one side feels different from the other, or whether one hip sits higher off the ground when your legs are in the same position.

My aim isn’t simply to stretch one muscle. It’s to help restore more equal tension throughout the body, because that’s how the body can organise and move more efficiently.
Do you notice difference between sides?

A great morning supporting a great cause.

Thank you to everyone who came along to Stacey’s charity postural class. It was wonderful to see so many people experience a Posturefit class while coming together for such a worthwhile cause.

We had an amazing turnout, followed by coffee and a chance to catch up afterwards. It was a great morning, and we’re proud to have been able to play a small part in Stacey’s fundraising.

Wishing Stacey all the very best as she takes on her 500 km charity ride in Thailand. We’re all behind you!
