Men’s Health Spotlight: Rush Hour Scrimmages
5:30am. One court. One community.

Every week, before most of Auckland wakes up, the Rush Hour crew gathers at the Ōtara Pool & Leisure Centre. It’s more than just basketball. It’s mates checking in on mates, sharing stories, having a laugh, and making sure everyone leaves feeling a little stronger than when they arrived.

As we shine a spotlight on Men’s Health Week, Rush Hour reminds us that looking after our health isn’t always about appointments or programmes. Sometimes it’s as simple as showing up, getting active, and being there for one another.

For over 10 years, these early morning scrimmages have built friendships, resilience, and a sense of belonging—proving that the strongest teams are built on connection, not just competition.

This is what men’s health looks like.
Brotherhood.
Movement.
Conversation.
Looking out for each other.

If you’re looking for a place to get active, connect with others and start your day right, come and join Rush Hour at Ōtara Pool & Leisure Centre - Contact the centre for scrimmage days and times.

Well Child Wednesday x Men's Health Week

This week, we celebrate the fathers, uncles, grandfathers, brothers and father figures who show up for our tamariki every day.

Well Child checks aren't just for mums. Your presence matters too. Whether it's attending appointments, asking questions, celebrating milestones or simply being there – the role you play helps children grow healthy, safe and connected.

Get in touch with our SSH Wellchild Team – check out our website for more information on contacting our team.

This Men's Health Week, remember: looking after your own health means being there for the moments that matter most.

Book your child's Well Child visit.
Prioritise your own health too.
Because strong whānau start with showing up for one another.
Who are you showing up for this Men's Health Week?

Celebrating Men’s Health Week

Men’s health isn’t a journey we take alone.

In Pacific communities, strength has always been collective. It’s found in the brother who checks in, the uncle who shares his story, the father who asks for help, and the friend who walks alongside you when times are tough.

As you look at this image, ask yourself: Who will you pass the ball to this week? Who can you encourage to book that health check, attend that appointment, take a break, or simply ask, “How are you really doing?”

This Men’s Health Week, let’s celebrate the men in our lives by creating spaces where checking in, speaking up and supporting one another becomes the norm.

Because healthier men mean healthier families, stronger communities, and brighter futures.

LTP Twinning Placement Programme Update | Samoa

One of our SSH Team Members Cherry Elisaia is now entering month two of her three-month placement with the Samoa Ministry of Health through the Samoa–New Zealand LTP Twinning Programme, funded by MFATNZ.

Since her last update, Cherry has supported diabetic foot clinics, triage, wound care, mobile clinics, and acute services at APCC and Moto’otua Hospital. She has also joined the Apia Urban Outreach Service, contributing to community-based care, TB screening, and health education.

Highlights for Cherry have included sharing presentations with Samoa MOH colleagues, participating in health checks for nearly 500 children alongside the Utah Healthy Samoa team, and learning from Samoa’s Women’s Committees, whose leadership plays a vital role in promoting community health and wellbeing.

We’re sharing a few photos from Cherry’s work in Samoa over the last few weeks.

Stronger whānau. Stronger communities.

Recently, local fathers and men came together for the first Men’s Wellness Workshop, creating a culturally safe space for talanoa, reflection, learning, and connection.

The positive feedback received reinforced the importance of initiatives like these, where men can support one another, strengthen their wellbeing, and take practical insights back to their families and communities.

Fa’afetai to everyone who attended and to our community partner Le Va for helping make this kaupapa possible.

Well Child Wednesdays - Meet our Team

Talofa lava! My name is Miriama and I’m a Community Healthcare Worker with the South Seas Well Child Team. I’ve been privileged to serve our families and community for the past four years. One of the best parts of my role is meeting new mums, babies and whānau as they begin their parenting journey. I’m often the first member of our team that families meet, helping introduce our services, answer questions, and ensure families feel supported from the very start.

Are you expecting a baby or have a child under 5 years old?

Our Well Child Team is here to support you with:
Growth and development checks
Parenting support and advice
Health and wellbeing guidance
Connections to community services

To get in touch with our Well Child Team, contact South Seas Healthcare Trust and our friendly team will help connect you with the right support.

We look forward to meeting you and your whānau / aiga soon!

Working Together for Safer Pacific Families

South Seas Healthcare Trust was pleased to recently host members of the Fa’avae O Fanaki Pacific Coalition Governance Group.

The Coalition unites Pacific organisations and government partners to strengthen collaboration, improve coordination, and champion culturally grounded solutions that support the wellbeing and safety of Pacific families. This is achieved through collaborative efforts to eliminate family and sexual violence within our communities.

Fa’afetai to all who attended and contribute to this important kaupapa. Together, we are building stronger, safer futures for our Pacific communities.

Manuia le Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa! 🇼🇸

“‘E afua mai i mauga tetele manuia o le nu‘u – From the high mountains are the blessings of the village.”

As we wrap up the working week celebrations o Le Vaiaso o Le Gagana Samoa - we share our final video that highlights that language is more than words. It is a sacred gift passed down through generations, carrying the prayers, wisdom, values, and faith of our ancestors.

Through the Samoan language, we learn who we are, where we come from, and the spiritual foundations that guide our lives. Every greeting, proverb, hymn, and prayer reflects the blessings that flow from those who came before us.

🇼🇸 E iloa le tama Samoa i lona malofie. 🇼🇸

Long before introductions are made, the malofie tells a story.

It speaks of identity, responsibility, service, and belonging. It is a sacred mark carried with pride, connecting a Samoan man to his ancestors, family, village, and culture. Across the world, when a Samoan man wears his traditional attire and his malofie is visible, it is often one of the first signs that tells others, “O a’u o le Samoa” – I am Samoan.

The malofie is more than a tattoo. It is a living expression of heritage, resilience, and the values passed down through generations. It reminds us that our culture is not only spoken through our language, but also carried in our actions, our posture, our service, and the symbols gifted to us by our ancestors.

“E afua mai i mauga tetele manuia o le nu’u” – From the high mountains are the blessings of the village.
