Last week, Justin and Libby from Independent Living attended the Veterans Support Forum in Wellington, held at Te Rauparaha Arena in Porirua City Centre.

It was a fantastic day connecting with the veteran community, with over 150 veterans taking part. A real highlight was meeting Hon Chris Penk, Minister for Veterans and Defence, who thanked Independent Living for our ongoing support of veterans throughout the year and at events like this. He was especially interested in the products we'd brought along to help make life easier for our senior vets.

Thank you to everyone who organised and attended; it's always a privilege to be part of these occasions.

Today marks the first World Day for Assistive Technology.

Assistive technology means the products, tools and support that help people do the things that matter to them. Wheelchairs, hearing aids, communication devices, mobility aids, daily living solutions and more. At its heart, it's about independence, dignity, choice and participation.

Today we acknowledge our wonderful team at Independent Living, who help people, whānau, carers and clinicians find the right solutions every day. We're so proud of the care and skill they bring.

Here's to celebrating not just the technology, but what it makes possible: everyday moments, connection, confidence and opportunity.

Help shape better disability support.

From 8 June to 31 July, Disability Support Services (DSS) wants to hear from disabled people, whānau, families and carers on how to improve some key service areas. That includes better carer respite, more choice and control over the supports you use, earlier and planned support, and easier access to information and advice.

This builds on what the community has told DSS over the past two years, and focuses on what matters most to you.

You can read the consultation documents and register for workshops, ahead of the consultation opening on 8 June.

Big purchases deserve careful thought, and that's especially true with mobility equipment. The mobility equipment that suits you today may be different from what suits you in three months.

Our short-term hire range gives you breathing room. You can stay mobile while you recover, travel, or take the time to find the long-term option that genuinely fits.

Swipe through for the three situations we see most often, and the reasons hire works so well in each.

Our team is available instore or on 0800 625 100 whenever you'd like a chat or at ilsnz.org

The Disability Support Services Bill is now before New Zealand Parliament, and the public submissions close on Friday 12th June.

This Bill will shape how disability support services are designed and delivered across Aotearoa for years to come. The submission process is an opportunity for disabled people, whānau, carers, and the wider sector to share what the current system means to them and what they would like to see in the future.

A submission can be short, written in your own words, and grounded in your personal experience. Honest, personal submissions are often the most powerful.

Read the Bill and prepare your submission here: https://loom.ly/2aNmiI0

What this lovely review captures so well is the difference the little things make.

A scooter that's intuitive the moment you get it, and gets helped by someone who treats you like family from the first hello. Those moments turn a stressful situation into a manageable one, and a holiday into a memory worth keeping.

Thank you for trusting us with your trip.

Meet Deb, our Operations Manager and one of our longest-serving team members.

Deb first joined Independent Living back in 2011 to help develop the Be. Welcome assessment tool, ahead of the Rugby World Cup, a national system rating how accessible NZ businesses were for visitors. Fifteen years on, she's still here!

We asked Deb what she wishes more people knew before they get in touch. Her answer: "Come and see us early. Life can be short, so keep making the most of every moment."

Deb sums up Independent Living in three words: caring, knowledgeable, trustworthy.

A proud moment for our team. This week, we were recognised at the Federation of Disability Information Centres Conference for our Commitment to Professional Development of our staff.

The award speaks to how we induct new team members and the depth of training they complete in our information services, so the people who come to Independent Living can always rely on the answers they get. Thank you to our incredible team.
