Mānawatia a Matariki ✨ As we welcome the Matariki stars, we take time to reflect on the year that's been, remember those who have gone before us, and celebrate the people who surround us today.

May this Matariki bring opportunities to reconnect, share kai, embrace new beginnings, and look forward with hope for the year ahead.

Pink Shirt Day is a reminder that everyone deserves to feel safe, seen, and supported.

On Friday across the motu our teams came together to wear pink on Pink Shirt Day/Anti Bullying Day to celebrate diversity, inclusion, promote kindness, connections and respect in our workplaces. We dont do this just on Pink Shirt Day but every day to celebrate an inclusive workplace where people can show up as their authentic selves.

Thanks to our team for bringing kindness, respect, and belonging to what we do every day.

Last week, ABI Rehabilitation and Proactive Healthcare were proud to support a number of our kaimahi to attend and present at the Australasian Society for the Study of Brain Impairment (ASSBI) and New Zealand Special Interest Group in Neuropsychology (NZSIGN) Conference held in Ōtautahi Christchurch.

Our teams delivered how-to sessions, oral presentations, and poster presentations covering topics from cultural authenticity in brain injury rehabilitation to concussion recovery through group education and peer support. These presentations reflected our commitment to evidence-based practice and person-centred rehabilitation that recognises the social, cultural, and environmental factors shaping recovery.

A huge congratulations to Te Rina Ruru-Pelasio, Māori Development Manager, who received the ASSBI/Summer Foundation Lived Experience Award for the session demonstrating the greatest impact on people with lived experience.

We also want to acknowledge Jonathan Armstrong, Director of Allied Health, and Kathryn Murrell, Clinical Neuropsychologist and National Psychology Advisor at ABI Rehabilitation, who co-convened this year’s conference programme.

ABI Rehabilitation and Proactive Rehab were also proud sponsors of the conference.

National Psychology Week | 11–17 May
Theme: Remember the past and dream for the future

This week is a chance to celebrate how Psychology supports people to heal, adapt, and move forward in life.

Across Aotearoa, Psychologists work in hospitals, clinics, schools, homes, community settings, and online - supporting kiritaki through a wide range of challenges, including:

- Brain injury (TBI, stroke, cardiac events, hypoxia)
- Acute and chronic pain
- Long COVID
- Injury-related mental distress
- Sports injuries and concussion

Alongside rehabilitation, psychologists also support therapy, assessment, return-to-work planning, and recovery goal-setting.

Beyond this, psychology plays a role across mental health services, schools, prisons, GP practices, NGOs, universities, and private practice - all contributing to wellbeing in our communities.

National Psychology Week | 11–17 May
Theme: Remember the past and dream for the future

This week celebrates Psychology and the role it plays in supporting our minds, wellbeing, and future.

Our Psychology Team shares a few simple ways to care for your brain health: staying physically active, eating well, prioritising good sleep, and avoiding smoking while managing alcohol intake. It also helps to protect your head when needed, stay on top of any health conditions, keep learning new things, and make time for meaningful activities.

Connection is just as important- spending time with others and getting out into nature can make a real difference.

Te Whare Tapa Whā reminds us wellbeing is holistic:

Taha tinana (physical), taha hinengaro (mental), taha whānau (social), and taha wairua (spiritual).

Today on International Nurses Day we recognise the skill, care and dedication our ABI nurses across our inpatient and community services bring to their work supporting kiritaki in their rehabilitation journey every day.

All of ABI’s nurses play an integral part of ABI’s leadership and rehabilitation service delivery.

ABI has a large team of nurses who are so valued by ABI, kiritaki, whānau and the wider rehabilitation team.

National Psychology Week | 11–17 May
Theme: Remember the past and dream for the future

This week we celebrate the incredible mahi of Psychologists across Aotearoa.

All our Psychologists are registered with the New Zealand Psychologists Board (NZPB), ensuring safe, ethical, and professional care.

They bring expertise across areas including neuropsychology, pain management, clinical, behavioural, health psychology, and paediatrics.

Our Psychology team supports kiritaki and whānau throughout their rehabilitation journey after physical and mental injury, providing:

• Psychological assessments
• Therapeutic support and intervention
• Treatment planning and guidance

Psychology is an essential part of our interdisciplinary team (IDT) approach, helping ensure care is holistic, person-centred, and recovery-focused.

We’re grateful for the expertise and compassion our Psychology team brings every day.

Latest reports indicate that almost 200,000 New Zealanders are living with Long COVID https://loom.ly/slpqlOk

ABI Rehabilitation offers a Long COVID Support Program that assists people to self-manage their symptoms, such as “brain fog” and fatigue, and develop strategies that allow them to return to everyday living; including work, household, social, and exercise activities.

Although the programme has no government funding those with income protection insurance could be elligible to access funding. ABI is happy to work with those who can pay privately for the programme.

Today we celebrate the incredible people who keep everything running smoothly behind the scenes.

Your organisation, attention to detail, and dedication don’t go unnoticed. You are the backbone of every successful team, the problem-solvers, the planners, and the calm in the chaos.

A big ngā mihi to our admin, reception and referrals team for helping keep our facilities and clinics on track. Many of you are the face of ABI when greeting kiritaki and whānau and we receive such positive feedback about your approach and interactions with kiritaki and visitors.

Thank you for all that you do - today and every day!
