Sitting here negotiating with my grumpy hip again reminds me how exhausting living with pain can be. Not just physically, but mentally too.

After a while, the body can start anticipating it before anything has even triggered it, staying tense, alert and protective.

That constant stress response is exhausting in itself.

Because the brain and nervous system play such a big role in how pain is experienced, hypnotherapy can help calm that response.

It can help reduce hypervigilance, ease protective tension patterns, and help the nervous system feel less reactive and on high alert all the time.

It’s often not just the pain itself that changes, but the tension, fear and constant mental load surrounding it too.

“I just need more discipline.” I’ve heard that a lot lately… which felt worth posting about, especially given I’ve been a bit quiet on here… mildly ironic ;)

One client had a really solid business idea and genuinely wanted to do it, but every time he sat down to start, he’d drift. Emails, tidying, “just a bit more research”… and the day would disappear.

He thought he was being lazy. He wasn’t. His brain had linked starting with pressure and getting it wrong, so it kept nudging him towards things that felt safer instead. Nothing dramatic, just enough to stall him.

Once that shifted, he didn’t need more motivation. He just started.

Often it’s not about trying harder, just understanding what your mind is doing… and giving it a cue to respond differently. If your brain has linked starting with pressure or threat, it will nudge you towards avoidance.

In hypnotherapy, we work to shift that pattern so the response changes.

Sometimes that starts very simply - a pause, a slower breath out, and a small physical action that tells your system it’s safe enough to begin.
