Are you a nurse working with tamariki and whānau affected by eczema? Or do you know someone who is?

The Paediatric Society of New Zealand's Eczema Child and Youth Clinical Network has launched a national nursing audit to understand where the biggest education gaps are for nurses supporting children with eczema. It's led by Faasoa Aupaau, Paediatric Dermatology Nurse Specialist at Starship Children's Health, drawing on her clinical experience with tamariki and whānau across Aotearoa.

The survey takes under 10 minutes, is voluntary, and can be completed anonymously. The team is especially keen to hear from Māori and Pacific nurses, and nurses working in rural communities, so the findings reflect the full diversity of our nursing workforce.

If this is you, we'd love for you to take part. And if you know a nurse who works with children with eczema, please share this with them. The more voices in this audit, the better the support and education nurses receive in future.

Why does timing matter? Because a conversation about allergies reaches people differently when it happens during pollen season.

This spring, Allergy Awareness Week arrives for the first time at the start of September. It's not by accident. Our CEO Mark Dixon explains why moving the week to spring gives families the information and support they need, exactly when they need it most.

From policy work with Pharmac and food regulators, to meeting whānau in communities, to working with clinicians across the Tasman, Mark's column shows what it takes to give allergies a real voice in Aotearoa.

🌼 Meet our Allergy Awareness Week 2026 symbol.

This sunflower isn't just beautiful. It's a story. Our board member Gavin designed this image to show what spring allergies actually look like for so many of us in Aotearoa.

The sunflower becomes an umbrella, protecting a child from spring rains and the pollen that flowers release this time of year. But look closer. See the pollen in the rain itself? That's Gavin's nod to "Thunderstorm Asthma," a real phenomenon where storms intensify airborne allergens and trigger both asthma and allergies.

The sunflower is low-allergenic and matches our logo. It's a symbol of hope and protection.

This is why we're celebrating Allergy Awareness Week during spring for the first time. It's when allergies feel most urgent for so many of us.

For the next five days, we're celebrating allergies, anaphylaxis, and the thousands of Kiwis managing these conditions. This year, we're marking AAW during spring for the first time, a season when allergies are top of mind for so many of us.

Whether you're managing hay fever, food allergies, anaphylaxis, or another allergic condition, this week is about you. We're sharing resources, stories, and support to help you feel less alone.

Asian Hauora Day is on Saturday 5 September, 11am to 3pm at New Lynn Community Centre. Just drop in, no booking needed.

On the day you'll find blood pressure checks, allergy support and resources, cervical and bowel screening, mental health support, child health, and much more, all free.

What actually puts a child at risk of developing a food allergy?

A landmark review published in JAMA Pediatrics analysed 190 studies involving 2.8 million participants across 40 countries and identified more than 300 risk factors associated with food allergy development in children.

The biggest modifiable factors: delaying the introduction of allergenic foods beyond 12 months and early antibiotic exposure, particularly in the first month of life. Non-modifiable factors include a family history of allergy, having eczema, being firstborn, and being male.

Importantly, the study found no link between vaccines and food allergy.

Understanding your child's risk means you can act earlier. If your baby has eczema or a family history of allergy, speak with your GP or a specialist about early allergen introduction.

Is gluten really the problem, or is something else going on?

A major review led by researchers at the University of Melbourne, published in The Lancet, has turned long-held beliefs about gluten sensitivity on their head. The research found that for most people with non-coeliac gluten sensitivity (NCGS), the symptoms are driven by fermentable carbohydrates (FODMAPs), other wheat components, or even the expectation of reacting, not gluten itself.

This is important for people self-managing gut symptoms on restricted diets. If you have been avoiding gluten but still feeling unwell, it may be worth speaking with a specialist about what is actually driving your symptoms.

Coeliac disease is different and requires strict gluten avoidance. For coeliac disease, nothing changes.

Food allergy affects far more than what you eat. A new clinical guideline published in December 2025 by the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology says mental health support for people with food allergy and their caregivers should be a standard part of clinical care, not an afterthought.

The guidance covers practical approaches for integrating mental health professionals into allergy clinics and evidence-based treatment options.

How much of an allergen does it actually take to trigger a reaction? New research is bringing us closer to an answer.

A 2026 Allergen Bureau report on a study of over 1,100 food challenges across 11 allergens found that reactions at very low doses were generally mild to moderate, most often affecting the skin.

This kind of research underpins the science behind food labelling thresholds and helps regulators make safer decisions about precautionary warnings. It is complex work, but it matters for every family reading a food label. More at https://tr.ee/OVqQK_VJR2
