Emotions and Patterns
The struggle to express emotions safely and to have support for doing so, healthily and helpfully, was certainly not something I grew up with. I would say this is true for many people. As a result, we learn early in life that emotions are not always welcome and can be unsafe to show. These lessons are not just in the home but also in our schools and work environments, so we show up as the actors in our lives. These actors become patterns we believe are who we are.

From a somatic perspective, fawning is not simply a behaviour; it’s an intelligent adaptation which can create a pattern— and it’s a nervous system state. The body organises itself around monitoring others, reading for cues of approval, maintaining connection at any cost. Attention and energy and/or qi, flows perpetually outward rather than inward. Over time, for me, this led to exhaustion and burnout more than once.

Part of my healing has been learning, gently and gradually, to turn that attention back toward myself — to notice my own sensations, feelings and needs; to tolerate disagreement and difference without alarm; to set boundaries that honour rather than abandon me; to remain connected to myself while staying connected to others; and to discover, slowly, that relationships can survive authenticity.

Fawning is a survival response — one that develops, often early in life, when a person learns that the safest way to navigate relationships is to please, appease, and accommodate. I know this pattern intimately. Avoiding conflict. Prioritising others' needs over my own. Feeling other people's emotions and I use to believe I was responsible for them or get confused if they were mine or theirs.

I’m going to post some writing Im doing in in small bites. I feel so may people searching and want to reach more and share some things I have found helpful.
So much has shaped how I identify myself, and how I have moved through the world. As I examine these identifications more carefully, I have come to recognise how many of them were not truly mine — how many were constructed in response to what I needed to survive. We all do this. We develop patterns of behaviour, thought and emotion in response to how we grow up, and over time we begin to believe that these patterns simply are who we are.

Basic Principles of SE™
NZD90 +GST, on Friday 5 June, 12.00-3.00pm NZT
http://www.humaniteam.nz/

Hosted by: Julie Teestov, the teacher of the SE™ training in Aotearoa New Zealand

In this presentation, you will be introduced to the foundations of the SE™ model and learn what makes it unique and powerful for working with event-related, developmental or systemic trauma. This presentation will provide a summary of pertinent trauma physiology for understanding the mind-body states and symptoms that result from chronic stress and trauma. You will learn how the “language of the body” can be incorporated with a client’s cognitive narrative to renegotiate trauma physiology. We will discuss cutting-edge research about how interoception and exteroception are involved in fear-based memory formation and extinction. During this 3-hour presentation, you will be invited to participate in several short experiential exercises to support the integration of your learning.

Julie Teetsov is a Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner and Faculty with Somatic Experiencing® International. She is a techniques-certified Craniosacral Therapist with the Upledger Institute, certified Somatic Movement Educator with the School of Body Mind Centering® and a Dynamic Attachment Re-patterning Experience (DARe®) Practitioner. In addition to teaching SE, Julie has a private practice in Auckland where she specialises in working with touch and movement with adult clients who have experienced early birth trauma and/or childhood medical trauma. For many years Julie worked as a touch and movement practitioner at a non-for-profit governmental agency offering mental health and wellbeing services for people from refugee backgrounds in Aotearoa where she experienced the power of human resilience and how people can connect across language and culture through the body.
