Our Acre Story

Our Acre Story We found our patch of NZ — rural views, town just down the road — and built our family home on it from the ground up.

We're in it now, but the story's far from finished. 🏡 Follow along for the real version. 🌿 OurAcreStory is a journey of our family's escape to the tranquility of acreage living. 🏞️ Join us as we build our dream home, embrace sustainable practices, and share the beauty of off-grid life. 🌿

Having this view from the kitchen has become one of the things we appreciate most.

Looking out across open land while getting on with the little jobs of the day brings a sense of calm that’s hard to explain.

It’s not a grand feature or a designer finish.

Just a reminder to slow down and enjoy where you are.

And somehow, that has become one of the most cherished parts of living here.

If you came over right now you'd see walls we haven't decided on yet, a bench seat still waiting on cushions, no coffee table, no rugs, and an outdoor area that's very much a work in progress and the list goes on…

A home doesn't have to reveal itself all at once. Some parts need to be lived in before you know what they need. You have to feel the light, watch how the space gets used, let the family find their rhythm in each room.
The house is built. The home is still becoming.
That's not a problem. That's the point.

The details — all the small decisions that add up to a home

There’s something about a fireplace that makes a house feel real.

We watched this go from concrete block and raw timber to the heart of our living room. No shortcuts, no rushing it — just doing it right and trusting the process.

Standing in this room now, with the fire going and the family around it, I think about how many times we looked at that blank wall and just… knew.

That’s the thing about building your own home. You carry the vision from day one. You just have to stay patient long enough to let it arrive.

If you’re in the middle of something big right now — keep going. The before doesn’t last forever.

We spent two years planning every single detail of this build. Floors, tiles, benchtops, fixtures — every decision was thought through.

Blinds? Total afterthought.

And then they went in. And the whole house changed.

Not just how it looked — how it felt. The light was right. The rooms felt finished. The temperature was finally under control. We pressed one button and every thermal blind in the house went up at the same time.

That’s the moment it stopped being a house we built and started being a home we live in.

We used Better Blinds — automated thermals throughout, manual sun filters in the rooms that needed them, and a double blind system in the bedrooms so we actually get to choose the kind of morning we wake up to.

If you’re building or renovating and blinds are still on your “we’ll figure that out later” list — move them up.

They said country living is aesthetic. They weren’t wrong. They also weren’t entirely right. 😅The mess is part of it. The beauty is part of it. Most days both exist in the same place. Drop a 🌿 if your place looks anything like this.
