Your skin absorbs product better after a shower (or sauna in this case).

I guess the theme for the week is 🌈 I captured it this morning.

Last night I did some sauna sessions for the first time, my husband introduced me to it.

At 80°c, it didn't take long before the water droplets from the pre-entry shower evaporated from my skin and was quickly replaced by my sweat droplets. My body's own water evaporating.

I watched the droplets kind of 'appear' on the surface of my skin and then start sliding down my body as gravity took over.

And yes, I was thinking - detox time baby. It was like a steam session for my face and it felt great but the point I'd like to make is this:

after a sauna session or hot shower, your skin is actually primed and ready to absorb product. So make sure you're using the ones that really count.😉

Refraction: the bending of light as it moves from one medium to another.

Almost every morning, when the sun is out, there's a little rainbow on the bathroom wall.

It reminds me of the concept of change, that we are all moving through different mediums of life and kind of bending and changing direction as we go - hoping to be a rainbow at the end I reckon.

It's also applicable to my Roots journey - trying to start again, working through the mediums and bending as I go, hopefully with a successful skincare brand- who knows!?

I hope you see rainbows on your bathroom walls, and your life.

- Liquid Gold -

Ok ok this is more like liquid 'amber' since it's missing some of my usual golden ingredients- which I've since ordered.

Nonetheless, I have been enjoying this simple blend of plant oils such as jojoba and rosehip.

Did you know that jojoba is actually a liquid wax and it has a similar chemical structure to our skin's natural oil, sebum? Pretty cool hey.

Once my retinol palmitate and vitamin E (tocopherol) arrives, I'll be adding those babies in too.

Favourite plant oils anyone? Tell me why.

- Shampoo & Conditioner bars -

On Sunday's there is a pre-loved market down the road from us and as you know, I've been looking for a silicone mold to use for my bars.

I happened to find one by chance at the market but didn't have cash, only my phone on me. The seller was a slick Rick and suggested that in exchange for a can of lager, I could have the mold.

And that's the story of how I got my new, 'second hand mold'- by buying a can of lager (where I could tap to pay) and exchanging it with the seller.

So the next time you see one of my bars, it should look less rustic than the ones in the pic above. I've tried these by the way and am pretty happy with the way my hair felt afterwards. I'll see if I can do a video somehow.

- Kawakawa Facial Cleansing Bar -

I've been enjoying playing around with 'solid' surfactants and experiencing the outcome. I don't think I've ever made a facial cleanser bar like this before so I wasn't sure how it would come out- also - remind me to get some moulds.

The outcome: ok so it doesn't look pretty because I need a mould, but I'm really impressed with the way the cleanser lathers and creates a thick, creamy texture. The lather and cleansing properties come from the sodium cocoyl isethionate (SCI) and the creamy texture comes from using an emulsifier in the formulation - which I hadn't tried before. Definitely a good addition.

There is also kokum butter in here, something I haven't used before.

I'd say the 'hero' ingredient is the Kawakawa oil, which comes from the plant that is native to New Zealand. It's believed to carry strong anti inflammatory and antibacterial properties. A fine addition to complement the cleansing action.

Oh and I also chucked in some exfoliating granules for good measure (got to get those dead skin cells off).

I think I'm hooked on cleanser bars.

oh hey, this is my story

Howsit sweet people. I’m Andrea, the founder and formulator and mad scientist behind all things Roots!

Not born but bred in the Upper highway area of Durbs for the last 16 years, with a few of those years dedicated to studying my BSc in Microbiology and Biochemistry at Stellenbosch University. That was a real treat of a place to live. A real treat ek se. I finished up with my Honours in Biochemistry at UKZN PMB campus in 2014 and from there mostly did rep jobs, like selling lab equipment to all the research, clinical and path labs and then moved on to do medical repping where I sweet talked doctors and specialists. These were great jobs for getting exposure to all things ‘real world’ which I’m totes grateful for but I’ve always been a dreamer, a bit of a ‘go against the flow’ peep and something of a non-conformist. Eish, that twitch in my heart kept telling me there was something that I would make mine.

And so, out of a season of uncertainty, Roots found me. Since my initial dabbling, I’ve completed a Diploma in Natural Skin Care Formulations through an accredited online school (2016) and am currently doing the Advance diploma in Cosmetic skin science. I guess the bottom line is that when I step into my lab room, I feel both joy and content. Experimenting blows my hair back and floats my boat, that’s a double whammy right there. Creating products puts a spring in my step. Seeing the final outcome just before sending products on their way, makes my heart burst with pride. Roots has given me a platform to express both my creative and scientific passions- how can I not want to bust a few moonwalks and b***y shakes?! I’m doing it right now.

These products are about skin nourishment, hydration and restoration. Our skin does a mighty fine job of taking care of itself so I try not to mess with that but exposure to the world and what we consume does impact our outer coat. Roots is saying, ‘howsit skin, I’m here to offer some TLC and extra love”, and as a result, skin feels softer, moisturised, restored and choons, “I’m loving Roots bru” ;) Plus, it’s all natural- either cold pressed, virgin or organic plant oils and butters. Roots doesn’t dig animal testing. Roots digs Mother Earth, being kind to nature, zoning in on zero waste and keeping s**t simple. Oh how wonderful does a simple life sound!?
