Spencer has been exploring Auckland’s new rail network with his puppy raiser, Ian, and he’s taking it all in his stride!

Experiences like these are an important part of puppy raising, helping our dogs build confidence, become comfortable in new environments, and learn to navigate the world around them.

With trains, unfamiliar sounds and busy platforms, there’s plenty to take in — but Spencer wasn’t fazed at all! He coped brilliantly with the whole experience. What a good boy! 💚

Quinn’s next chapter begins!

Last week, Quinn officially began his next chapter as a Therapy Dog, joining a psychologist and her whānau in Wellington. He’ll be working alongside her as part of a Youth Mental Health Team, and it’s safe to say he’s already making a wonderful impression!

Quinn was welcomed with his very own sign on his first day and has been busy meeting his new colleagues. But it’s the quieter moments that show just how special a Therapy Dog can be. One patient shared this beautiful reflection about Quinn:

“Dogs are so alert to danger, so the fact he’s so relaxed makes me feel like I’m safe here.”

Sometimes, a calm presence and a little unconditional love can make all the difference. We’re so proud to see Quinn beginning a role where he can help people feel safe, supported and more at ease.

A huge thank you to everyone who has played a part in raising, caring for and supporting Quinn throughout his journey. Every outing, training session, sleepover and new experience has helped prepare him for this important role.

And while he’s busy making a difference to others, Quinn still enjoys the occasional work-from-home day, complete with a cosy blanket and a well-earned nap! 🐶💤

We can’t wait to see the difference Quinn makes in the lives of the young people he meets.

A beautiful day at the Blessing of the Animals

On Sunday, we had the privilege of joining St Matthew-in-the-City for their beautiful Blessing of the Animals service — a wonderful celebration of the special place our beloved animals hold in our lives.

We are very grateful to St Matthew-in-the-City for choosing to fundraise for Mobility Dogs, welcoming us so warmly, and giving us the opportunity to share a little about the work we do and the difference our dogs make in the lives of people living with disabilities and in our communities.

Representing Mobility Dogs on the day were Spencer and Caesar, alongside their wonderful puppy raisers, Ian (who also works at St Matthew's) and Adriana.
Adriana read a beautiful poem with Caesar patiently by her side, while Ian shared a wonderful story about one of his previous puppies, Eddie. It was so special to hear about Eddie's journey and the lasting connections our dogs can make along the way.

And, of course, Spencer and Caesar both waited very patiently for their turn to be blessed by Reverend Richard Bonifant.

We feel incredibly privileged to be part of such a special day and to have the opportunity to share the work of Mobility Dogs with a community that so clearly understands the love, companionship and joy that animals bring to our lives.

Thank you, St Matthew-in-the-City, for your support of Mobility Dogs and for celebrating all creatures, great and small.

A little reminder that the Blessing of the Animals is happening this Sunday! 💚

We’d love to see our wonderful Mobility Dogs community come along and join us at St Matthew-in-the-City for this very special celebration of our animal companions.

Bring your dog, cat, rabbit, bird, horse or any other animal friend along for a special blessing. And if your animal can’t make it, you’re very welcome to bring a photo instead.

Whether he’s quietly watching the fish or calmly meeting some very curious lambs, Blake is putting the skills he learnt as a puppy into practice.

Part of Blake’s early training was learning how to remain calm and settled around different animals and distractions. Now, as a placed Therapy Dog, continuing to practise these skills helps him maintain his training and ensures those important behaviours don’t get rusty.

Because for our dogs, the training doesn’t stop when they’re placed — it continues throughout their working lives. 🐾💚

Eddie has already made quite an impression at Albany Junior High in his role as therapy dog!

Eddie was recently awarded the school’s Buzzy Bee Award — an award given to a staff member who has been nominated by their colleagues for making a positive difference.

Eddie’s anonymous nomination said it perfectly:

“Eddie has brought so much joy, happiness and laughter to our school. Students light up when they see him, and he has an amazing ability to bring a little calm and happiness to anyone’s day.”

His other important duties apparently include boosting morale, reducing stress, accepting unlimited pats and appearing whenever snacks might be involved. 😂

Congratulations, Eddie! We think you’re very deserving of your Buzzy Bee — and we love hearing about the difference you’re already making at Albany Junior High.

Sometimes, it’s not just the dogs we find hard to let go of…

One of the hardest parts of raising service dogs is knowing that, one day, you have to say goodbye. Raisers pour their hearts into these incredible dogs, knowing from the very beginning that their journey with them will eventually lead somewhere else.

But what we don’t always talk about is how hard it can be for us to say goodbye to the people who make this journey possible. Our raisers, boarders and volunteers become so much more than people who help us raise and train service dogs.

They become part of our Mobility Dogs family. We share the highs, the challenges, the celebrations, the heartbreaks and countless stories along the way. And today, we are saying goodbye (at least for now!) to someone who has been a very special part of that family.

Jack has been involved in raising an incredible number of service dogs for at least a decade. Ten years of opening his home and his heart to dogs who would go on to transform lives. Ten years of helping puppies learn, grow and become the amazing dogs they were destined to be.

Jack has given so much of himself to Mobility Dogs, and his contribution has reached far beyond the individual dogs he has helped raise. He has been a valued, trusted and much-loved member of our team.

Thank you, Jack, for everything you have given to our dogs, our clients and our Mobility Dogs family.

St Matthew-in-the-City is also supporting Mobility Dogs by collecting donations to help us continue our work creating life-changing partnerships between people and dogs. Our dogs work across our Mobility, Therapy and Companion Dog programmes, helping people to experience greater independence, confidence, connection and companionship.

We’re so grateful to the St Matthew-in-the-City community for choosing to support our work and for giving us the opportunity to be part of such a wonderful celebration of animals.
