🌸🌿 Our Guided Garden Tours are back! 🌿🌸

After a winter break, our guided garden tours restarted this week - and what a beautiful day to be back in the Botanic Gardens! ☀

Everyone enjoyed strolling through the gardens, taking in the beautiful magnolias, daffodils and many other signs of spring 🌼🌷

A special welcome to our new guide, Frances, who shared her time, knowledge and care with the group.

We finished with a cuppa in the sunshine beside the New Zealand Peace Bell. The perfect way to end a lovely morning. ☕️🌞

Continuing our journey together in South Canterbury 💙

Following our recent announcement, we’re pleased to share more about the next chapter for dementia support in South Canterbury as Alzheimer’s South Canterbury joins Dementia Canterbury from 1 November 2026.

This is an exciting step that brings our organisations together, creating a stronger, more connected service for people living with dementia, their families and whānau across Canterbury and South Canterbury.

For the people and communities who already receive support from Alzheimer’s South Canterbury, the focus remains the same - providing compassionate, practical support and information to help people live well with dementia.

By coming together, we can share knowledge, resources and expertise, while continuing to build on the valuable work Alzheimer’s South Canterbury has provided to its community.

We’re looking forward to welcoming our South Canterbury community into the Dementia Canterbury whānau and continuing this important work together. 💙

Together, we can make an even greater difference for people affected by dementia.

As World Alzheimer's Month continues, we're encouraging people to trust their instincts when something doesn't feel quite right.

🔎Dementia-mate wareware isn't one condition. It covers more than 100 different types, including Alzheimer's disease. That's part of why the signs can look different from person to person.

Changes in memory and thinking aren't always easy to notice at first. Early signs can include forgetting recent events, struggling to find the right words, or changes in mood, judgement, or behaviour, or finding it harder to manage familiar, everyday tasks.

💬 If you've noticed changes in yourself or someone you care about, don't feel you need to work out what's causing them on your own. Talking to your GP can be a good place to start.

📖 Know the signs. Check out this page on Dementia New Zealand's website: dementia.nz/about-dementia/signs-of-dementia/

🌸 Younger Onset Tuesday Programme – Walk & Talk 🌸

What a beautiful spring morning for our Younger Onset Tuesday Programme earlier this week!

The group made the most of the blue skies and sunshine with a lovely Walk & Talk, enjoying the spring flowers along the way – daffodils, bluebells and snowdrops. 🌼

After the walk, everyone headed to a local café for coffee, sitting outside in the sunshine and enjoying a well-deserved catch-up. ☕️☀️

There was plenty of chat, laughter and good company along the way. A wonderful morning enjoyed by all! 💜

September is World Alzheimer’s Month – a time to raise awareness, reduce stigma and encourage earlier support for people living with dementia | mate wareware across Aotearoa.

Alzheimer’s disease was first identified in 1907, by German doctor Alois Alzheimer. It’s still the most common cause of dementia, but it’s only one of many types. Dementia is an umbrella term for approximately 100 different conditions that affect the brain.

💜 A dementia diagnosis is not the end of the story. It can be the first step towards information, support and planning for what comes next.
🌱 Early support can make a real difference to living well with dementia.

The Earlier You Know. The More You Can Do.

Join us tomorrow for Driving - the next Specialist Dementia Education Series seminar.

Although a diagnosis of dementia does not mean automatic driver license suspension in New Zealand (as it does in some countries), dementia can indeed impact on driving safety.

Julie and Samantha, Occupational Therapy Team, Burwood Driving Assessment Service, will talk about how driving fitness is evaluated in a person with dementia.

📅 Wednesday 2 September
🕜 1:30pm - 3pm
📍 BrainTree 70 Langdons Road, Papanui

Registration is necessary to attend as space is limited. Click here to register: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/specialist-dementia-education-seminar-driving-tickets-1996881184377?aff=oddtdtcreator&keep_tld=true
