📣World Giraffe Day is almost here! Join our crew for hands-on activities, face painting and more!

When: Sunday 21 June
Time: 11:30am – 3:00pm
Where: In front of the giraffe house (or Zoo School if it rains)
What’s on:
– Get your giraffe on with face painting (four fun designs to choose from)
– Create your own ossicone headband to take home
– Drop in to our interactive education station and discover what makes giraffe so special
Don’t miss: Bonus giraffe talk at 2pm - learn how giraffe live, what challenges they face, and how your visit helps support them.

Cost: No additional cost to entry.

💙 National Volunteer Week 2026 | 14–20 June

Meet Thomas, one of our volunteers and a Hāpai Access Card holder.

"As someone with autism and a Hāpai Access Card holder myself, volunteering with Hāpai Access Card means so much to me. I joined the team in 2022 and over the years I've had the opportunity to be involved in the Business Team, help process applications with the Cards Team, and now support our social media.

Being able to give back to a community that I am part of has been incredibly rewarding. Volunteering has helped me build confidence, develop new skills and connect with amazing people who share a passion for making New Zealand more accessible and inclusive.

Outside of Hāpai Access Card, I host Drive Home Show on Plains Media on Plains Media , have been a member of Toastmasters for over 10 years, and I'm currently studying towards a Certificate in Information Technology. I love learning and finding ways to use my skills to help others.

As both a cardholder and a volunteer, I understand how important accessibility and understanding can be. That's why being part of Hāpai Access Card means so much to me. I'm proud to play a small part in helping others feel seen, supported and included.

Thank you to everyone who volunteers. You never know the difference a kind word, a helping hand, or simply giving your time can make in someone's life. I'm grateful to be part of the Hāpai Access Card whānau and excited to continue helping make a positive difference in our communities."

💙 National Volunteer Week 2026 | 14–20 June

Today marks the beginning of National Volunteer Week, Aotearoa New Zealand's annual celebration of volunteers and volunteering.

This year's theme, Your Year to Volunteer, celebrates the incredible people who already volunteer and encourages others to discover the difference volunteering can make.

Did you know that according to the 2023 General Social Survey, 53% of people in Aotearoa volunteered in the previous four weeks? Volunteers are helping to strengthen communities across the country every day.

At Hāpai Access Card , volunteers are at the heart of what we do. Their time, compassion and dedication help create a more accessible and inclusive Aotearoa for people with disabilities, impairments and health conditions.

Whether it's supporting applications, helping behind the scenes, sharing stories, or raising awareness through social media, every contribution makes a difference.

Throughout the week, we'll be celebrating some of the amazing people who make Hāpai Access Card possible.

💜 A message for our Hāpai Access Card community 💜

This Sunday, between 6pm and 7pm, phones across New Zealand will receive the nationwide Emergency Mobile Alert test. 📲⚠️

Most of us will hear the alert and move on with our evening.

But for someone in our community, an unexpected alert from a hidden phone could put their safety at risk.

📵 If you have a hidden phone for personal safety, consider turning it off or putting it in flight mode between 6pm and 7pm. Some devices may still sound even when set to silent.

🤍 You may not need this reminder.

But someone you know might.

Please share. It could help keep someone safe.
