Myth: A cancer diagnosis always means immediate treatment.
Fact: Some cancers can be carefully monitored before treatment is recommended.

Depending on the type and behaviour of the cancer, some patients may be offered active surveillance, where the cancer is monitored closely through scans, blood tests, or appointments over time. This approach allows specialists to avoid unnecessary treatment while still ensuring patients are carefully observed.

Treatment decisions are always guided by what is most appropriate for the individual patient and their specific cancer.

Fatigue during cancer treatment is different from simply feeling tired after a busy day.

Many patients describe it as a heaviness that can affect both physical energy and concentration, making everyday tasks feel more difficult than usual. Trying to push through it often makes things harder, which is why pacing yourself, resting when needed, and focusing on small achievable tasks can be so important.

Supportive services such as physiotherapy, exercise support, nutrition guidance, and wellbeing care through Encompass Health can also help patients better manage some of the side effects of cancer treatment and support recovery throughout their care journey.

Some of the most common cancers affecting men in New Zealand, including prostate and bowel cancer, often develop with few or very subtle symptoms early on.

That’s why awareness, screening, and regular health checks are so important. Understanding family history, paying attention to changes in your body, and speaking with your GP early can help detect problems sooner.

During Men’s Health Week, it’s a good opportunity to prioritise your health and encourage the men around you to do the same.

Bowel cancer screening can detect early signs of cancer before symptoms develop, which is why taking part when invited is so important.

The National Bowel Screening Programme in New Zealand provides eligible people with a simple home test kit designed to detect hidden blood in the stool. Alongside screening, lifestyle factors such as staying active, eating a diet high in fibre, limiting processed meats, and avoiding smoking can all help support bowel health.

Small preventative steps taken early can have a lasting impact.

Cancer can affect men in ways that go far beyond physical health.

A diagnosis, treatment, and recovery can all place pressure on mental wellbeing, relationships, confidence, and day-to-day life. Many men feel they need to stay strong for the people around them, even when they are struggling themselves.

Men’s Health Week is a good reminder that asking for support, talking openly, and looking after mental health are all important parts of overall wellbeing during cancer care.

Today is the start of Men’s Health Week, and it's a good opportunity for men to check in on their health and prioritise their wellbeing.

It’s common to ignore symptoms, delay check-ups, or hope things will simply improve with time, but early action can make a significant difference when it comes to cancer and other serious health conditions. Persistent fatigue, changes in bowel or bladder habits, unexplained weight loss, or ongoing pain should never be brushed aside.

Booking a check-up and having conversations about your health are important steps, not signs of weakness.

Changes in bowel habits are common and are often caused by something minor, but persistent changes should never be ignored.

Symptoms such as blood in the stool, ongoing abdominal discomfort, unexplained fatigue, weight loss, or a noticeable change in bowel movements are all worth discussing with your GP if they continue.

While these symptoms do not always mean bowel cancer, early investigation is important. The earlier bowel cancer is detected, the more treatment options are often available.

For many patients, one of the hardest parts of radiation therapy is not knowing what to expect beforehand.

In reality, treatment sessions are usually calm, carefully guided, and often much quicker than people imagine. Patients are positioned carefully by their treatment team before radiation is delivered with precision to the planned treatment area.

Understanding the process ahead of time can help reduce anxiety and make the experience feel more manageable from the very beginning.

Many people are surprised to learn how quietly bowel cancer can develop, often without obvious symptoms in the early stages.

That’s why screening is so important, particularly as the screening age in New Zealand is currently 58 and to be lowered to 56 from September. Ongoing symptoms such as changes in bowel habits, blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, or persistent abdominal discomfort should always be discussed with your GP.

Detecting bowel cancer early can make a meaningful difference to treatment options and outcomes.
