A newborn’s sleep does not follow a linear pattern, but develops through a gradual maturation process involving both physiological and relational systems.

Infant massage can be one of the experiences that support the transition between states of activation and states of greater calm. This happens indirectly, through the quality of the interaction and the opportunity for the baby to experience shared rhythms.

It is not an intervention aimed at “improving sleep,” but a relational experience that may, over time, contribute to a growing familiarity with one’s own bodily states.

Each baby integrates these experiences in a personal way, and the effects are not always immediately visible from the outside. In some cases, gradual changes in the ability to settle may be observed; in others, responses may appear less evident or more discontinuous.

Motherhood is also built through the body, before words take shape.

Touch is one of the earliest forms of communication between mother and baby, often happening spontaneously, in everyday life, without structure.

Infant massage can offer a space where this dimension is observed with more awareness—not to change it, but to recognize it.

Each mother–baby relationship is unique and does not follow a standard model. The way of touching, being together, responding, is different in every story.

Within this diversity, massage can be one possible language, without becoming a requirement or a measure of the relationship’s quality.

Many parents approach infant massage with the desire to offer relief to their baby, especially during moments of discomfort such as digestive tension, crying, or difficulty settling.

Massage can be one possible element within this search for comfort, but each baby responds differently.

Sometimes touch seems to support relaxation; other times, the baby may show that they are not available in that moment. This too is part of the experience.

Rather than a direct effect, relief may emerge from the quality of the interaction: feeling welcomed, sharing a rhythm, being listened to without pressure.

Over time, this experience may support a sense of mutual trust, without fixed expectations about what should happen.
