Today is Father’s Day here in New Zealand 💛

It’s a day we celebrate all the amazing Dads, Granddads, and father figures who make a difference in our lives.

Here is Shayne Mackenzie, owner and beekeeper at Woodland Honey, spending some quality time on a walk to Lonely Bay with our children, George and Olivia. Such a sweet family moment!

This week from 22-28 June is Pollinator Week 2026. It is a celebration of the vital role that pollinators play in our ecosystems, economies, and agriculture.

These essential creatures, including bees, are the unsung heroes behind the food we enjoy and the beauty that surrounds us. Bees gather pollen on the pollen sacs on their legs to take back to the hive and store to feed the baby bees. Their movements between flowers transfers pollen from one flower to another, providing the pollination service for the plants.

In the photo our bee is gathering pollen from tī kōuka flowers. You can see the pollen stored in the baskets on her back legs so she can fly it back to her hive to be mixed with honey and then stored in the wax comb to be eaten by baby bees at a later date.

Here are a few ways we can help our pollinator friends at home 🐝
🌸 grow pollinator friendly plants in the garden, borage and lavender are great choices
💧 put sticks or stones in shallow water so they can drink without drowning
☘️ let the lawn flower in spring when pollen requirements are highest for bees

To celebrate these tiny workers and the wonderful work they do for our ecosystem we have sent out a discount code to our subscribers, so check your inbox 🍯

Beautiful morning in Waikawau Bay helping to plant native trees in The Children's Forest with Colville School and Moehau Environment Group.

The project has been running for close to 20 years to help the coastal native forest regenerate above Waikawau Bay estuary in areas which have been dominated by kikuyu grass.

This mornings efforts saw 200 native seedlings planted by the children and helpers in less than an hour! 💪 🌿

Well done!
