Why a weight loss plateau shouldn’t get you down 👇
While in a calorie deficit, your body breaks fat down via a process called lipolysis.
Fat cells essentially shrink as the stored fat is used for fuel BUT.. here’s the catch 👇
A calorie deficit is a stressor on the body, it’s getting the message that energy availability is lower than usual 👉This triggers cortisol to increase.
Elevated cortisol (even temporarily after a bad nights sleep) increases water retention and can make you feel puffy + hold onto a couple of kilos too.
THIS IS WHERE PEOPLE GET DISHEARTENED AND GIVE UP.
Keep! Going! Even if the scale doesnt budge for 5-14 days..
Because eventually 👇
Your body adapts to the calorie deficit.
It perceives the deficit as less of a threat
Cortisol stabilises
Stored water is released via urine and sweat
And whamo.. you wake up another 1-2kg leaner.
This is known as the ‘whoosh’ effect. And yet, people often give up here and sabotage because they think their deficit and movement routine isn’t working.
This is something I see all the time in clinic and coach my clients through. You must have patience and grit to stick to the plan even on the days where your mind is fighting with you 🙏🏽
