Another herb for the people! Chamomile. Everyone knows this one, but it is so much more than just a sleepy time tea.
The Mother Herb - Matricaria recutita
Most people know chamomile as a relaxing bedtime tea, but this humble herb offers so much more.
Chamomile work by relaxing tension anywhere in the body, be it the nervous system, digestion, menstrual cramps..... David Hoffmann explains it like this: "As an antispasmodic herb, chamomile works on peripheral nerves and muscles, and thus indirectly relaxes the whole body. When the physical body is at ease, the mind and heart follow. "
For centuries, chamomile has been used to calm nervous tension, soothe digestive upset, ease muscle cramps, and support restful sleep. It is especially helpful when stress shows up in the body as indigestion, bloating, headaches, irritability, or a racing mind.
Chamomile is as a nurturing herb for all ages – from teething babies and restless children to adults carrying the weight of a busy, stressful life.
It is an extremely safe herb to use for all ages from babies to the elderly, pregnant or breastfeeding. The only caution would be to those with an allergy to the daisy family. Chamomile pollen could cause an allergic reaction in those people.
To make a medicinal tea, for adults, use 2-3 teaspoons of dried chamomile flowers, pour over a cup of boiling water, COVER, and steep for 10 minutes. Strain and drink. You can use just lightly less herb for a child. Add honey if the bitter taste is not to your liking.
If you have Chamomile in the house, you have medicine for almost every ache, from sore tummies and teething babies to stressed adults in need of comfort and calm.
