A few things people tell us before they arrive at a silent retreat:
"I'm not sure I can stay silent for that long." "My mind is too busy for this." "I probably need more experience first."
These are common worries before a silent retreat. And often, the people who feel most unsure beforehand are the ones most surprised by what the silence gives them.
Here's what we've noticed after running silent day retreats over the past year: the resistance usually isn't a reason not to come. It's a signal that silence is exactly what's needed.
Three days is different to one. A single day of silence offers a pause. Over several days, there is often a deeper settling. People commonly describe moving through restlessness at first, before arriving somewhere quieter and more grounded within themselves.
A few words from those who've joined us for the day retreats:
"It gave me a space to create a world of silence in a busy life, a space to simply exist and observe."
"Today I got to feel silent. I got to feel present."
"Grounding and freeing at the same time."
Our 3-Day Silent Meditation Retreat runs 16-19 July at Tauhara, Taupo.
