Willow is one of those fascinating plants where traditional herbal knowledge and modern science meet. 🌿

For centuries, herbalists have worked with willow for pain and inflammation. Today, we understand much more about the compounds within the plant - including salicin and its connection to the development of aspirin.

But unlike looking at one isolated compound, whole-plant herbalism explores the many different constituents within willow and how they work together.

Its value extends beyond herbal medicine too. Willow has been used to stabilise riverbanks, support ecosystems and help filter water, making it an incredibly versatile plant.

It’s a beautiful example of how much there is to discover about the plants growing right around us. 🌿

At our upcoming Willow Workshop in Glenorchy, we’ll explore the traditional knowledge, modern science and practical uses of willow - before heading out to forage and work with the plant ourselves.

What will you actually learn and do at our Willow Workshop? 🌿

We’ll begin with a walk beside the beautiful Rees River, just north of Glenorchy, where you’ll learn how to identify willow, which parts are used in herbal medicine, and how to forage it responsibly.

From there, we’ll head back to the workshop and get hands-on.

You’ll learn how to:
🌿 Identify and harvest fresh willow
🪵 Strip the bark and prepare it for drying
🫙 Make a fresh herbal tincture
📖 Explore the traditional herbal lore and modern science behind willow
✨ Create your own bottle of tincture to take home with you

It’s a practical morning designed to help you feel more confident working with the plants growing around us - not just learning about them in theory.

So, what can willow actually do? 🌿

Willow has been used by herbalists since ancient times and has a long traditional history of use for pain, inflammation, headaches, period pain and fever.

One of its best-known natural compounds is salicin, which is closely connected to the development of aspirin.

But willow is much more than a medicinal plant. It has also traditionally been used for basket weaving, can be used to make a natural rooting preparation for seedlings, and even has a history of use in water divining.

One plant, so many uses. 🌿

and a pretty powerful plant to have growing all around us!

We’ll be exploring willow in much more depth at our upcoming Glenorchy Willow Workshop - including how to identify, forage and prepare it yourself.
