He rongoā te reo rangatira, I stepped into my reo journey in 2023, i now stand in my third year!

It has been a healing journey for myself and has led me through many shifts, growths and environments where I’ve been tested more ways than I can count.

Kōmiri is one of the most powerful tools for healing, shifting mamae and releasing it through kōrero, it’s something that takes wisdom, skill and flexibility. It’s a balancing act between being gentle and being firm.

So it makes sense that learning te reo Māori can be a way to heal. To heal the trauma of our tūpuna whom got beaten for speaking Māori or to return it to our family by breaking that cycle.

I have close friends that have experienced this mamae first hand, i see them showing up every class fighting for their reo for themselves and their tamariki.

I always aspired to have my reo first before stepping into Rongoā, but my tūpuna and my good friend had over plans for me.

So if you have thought about learning te reo Māori, this is your sign to go and sign up…. You won’t regret it but you will regret never doing it. Go get your healing, go get your language

~story time~

I was barely 17 yesrs old when I joined the NZ Army, I look back and remenber how fresh, young and green I was. The 6 years I served I met some of the most important people in my life, the life lessons, the comradeship and where the journey to ‘me’ began.

While I come from a Māori whānau and was raised around it, I often felt out of sorts, like something was missing. I had an opportunity to follow my mother’s footsteps and go to St Joesph’s Māori Girls, but I declined cause Wairoa College was where my friends were going. Footnote: Part of healing is choosing to let the what if’s go….

Engari, I never would of found the cultural side of me if it wasn’t for the Army, I got the opportunity to partake as a member of our Trentham Pataka roopu (Kapa Haka group) and done countless pōwhiri for military parades, welcoming dignitaries to the country and other defence events.

This was the first time I felt Māori, I know it’s weird but IYKYK. I got the opportunity to learn Karanga at our Army Marae by a lovely wahine who came from Tuhoe. The seed for me wanting to learn our Reo was planted.

It was in this space that I learnt about Rongoā Māori, this was in 2008 or there abouts. I knew somehow, someday this was where I was going to land.

The Army changed my life and put me on the haerenga to the now, a place I keep closely weaved inside me.

Anyway with ANZAC Day approaching the memories flood,I have not missed an ANZAC service since i joined in 2006, alongside my brothers and sisters of AARC 336.

It will be no different this Thursday, I’ll be there at the dawn parade in Heretaunga.

We must remember those that gave their lives so we can live safely, make their loss not in vein and to ensure their sacrifice is passed to the future generations to carry the tradition.

To the fallen, I will remember! But also, I remember those we have lost on the way.
