The problem with being a nutritionist in New Zealand is that it's not a protected title; anyone can do a quick weekend or online course and call themselves a nutritionist. The internet doesn't help either and it's easy to find bad and contradicting advice. Yes, we all know we should be eating more wholefoods and less junk, but what about if you have a health condition? Dr Google doesn't quite cut it, and what helped your friend might not work for you.

You wouldn't get a mechanic to look after your teeth, or a doctor to fix your car, so why do so many of us put our nutrition in the hands of inexperienced people?

Make sure you are getting nutritional support from experts, be it a dietitian or a registered nutritionist.

Though most of us didn't need a study to know this, it just goes to show that not all calories are equal!

People eating ultra-processed foods ate more calories and gained more weight than when they ate a minimally processed diet, according to results from a new study. The difference occurred even though meals provided to the volunteers in both the ultra-processed and minimally processed diets had the sa...

I honestly love being a nutritionist. Every follow up I have with a client is always positive! Whether they've lost more inches than expected, their symptoms have improved with such small changes to their eating or they no longer feel like they're in a "diet prison", it always makes me feel so good knowing that I'm helping them make positive changes to their lives.

There is no "one diet" that fits everyone. We all have our own needs and what works for you might not work for your friend - and in some cases might be doing more harm than good. Make sure that whoever you are working with is qualified and knows what they're doing, tailoring your plan to your individual needs and modifying as needed.

I saw a client today for his follow up appointment. He came to see me because he wanted to manage his gout symptoms, improve his digestion, manage prediabetes symptoms and lose a little weight. His feedback? That everything I had asked him to do was manageable, easy to follow and stick to in the long run. He was able to see progress in his symptoms, his mood and weight in only 3 weeks! He also understood that health is a long term goal and a lifelong commitment, and has even recommended me to a few of his friends :)

How awesome is that! I set this client small, manageable goals and gave him freedom to choose good, wholesome food whilst not feeling deprived (no meal plans here as I don't believe they are sustainable).

Health shouldn't be hard! If you want to improve it, start by making small, daily changes. They slowly become your new normal.

"Most commonly the first commercial diet tried was Weight Watchers, followed by Jenny Craig. When these failed, some participants stated that they then tried more extreme techniques, such as pharmaceutical medications, and very low calorie diet supplements (such as slimming shakes)."

"...the 'diet' itself was unsustainable for most participants and did not promote long term change."

"...diets were impossible to stick to, but were successful as long as you remained on them:"They all work... when you stick to them. It's when you go off them that they don't." "

This article outlines the many problems with diets and quick fixes, and just how little support and help they provide with long term weight loss. This is why I focus on small, sustainable goals that create lifelong changes to promote a healthy weight loss that is maintainable, all whislt improving your lifestyle and changing habits.

To explore the extent to which people living with obesity have attempted to lose weight, their attitudes towards dieting, physical exercise and weight loss solutions, why their weight loss attempts have failed, and their opinions about what would be most beneficial to them in their struggle with the...

Some days health is a healthy salad. Others it's chocolate and biscuits. Today health has been reading, walks with a friend, snuggles with my dog and silly selfies.

Things has been feeling a bit off, so I made sure I got outside to get some vitamin D and fresh air today. Also known as the Sunshine Vitamin, it has been shown to help with depression and anxiety, boost the immune system, improve bone health by regulating calcium and phosphorus levels and help prevent type 2 diabetes.

All you need is 15 minutes a day in the Sun to get your daily requirement, so what are you waiting for!?!

QUICK FIXES DO NOT WORK!

How may of these diets have you tried over the years?:
- Low carb diet
- Low fat diet
- Atkins diet
- Egg fast
- Cabbage diet
- Detoxes
- Grapefruit diet
- Hormone replacement diets
- South Beach diet
- Master Cleanse diet
- Fruit only diets
- Liquid diets
- Soup diets
- Apple Cider Vinegar diets

You most likely lost weight on them. But, did you maintain it 6 months later? Or did you regain it plus more?

These diets promise quick weight loss: "lose 10kg in 2 weeks and look like Beyonce!", "JLo did this cleanse for a week and lost 5kg!" . I'm sorry, but those diets are not realistic, nor do you have the genetics of Beyonce. These diets forgo nutrients and health with the promise of weight loss that is not sustainable. What happens when you hit your goal? You don't know what to do, you go back to your normal eating habits and low and behold, you gain the weight back. Oh but the diet worked, it made you lose 5kg in a week.

The keys to successful weight loss are WHOLEFOODS, good sleep, stress management and movement. Only when all 4 of these health pillars are stable will you be able to maintain a healthy weight. We forget how these areas are connected to each other, the most obvious example being when you haven't slept enough and next thing you know all the pastries in the bakery seem like the most appealing thing you've ever seen. Also, it didn't take 2 weeks to gain 10kg of fat, you certainly aren't going to lose it in 2 weeks.

So, when you say next time "i have to lose weight", look towards changing your lifestyle habits and creating new healthy habits that are sustainable. Weight loss is not a sprint. Health is the ultimate goal.

A documentary not for the faint hearted!

This documentary shows us just how much obesity affects us, not just on the outside, but on the inside too. It shows us all the things we are warned about but just think "ah, that's not me, that won't happen".

With obesity becoming the new normal, it is important for us to take a step back and realise how much of an impact it makes on our health. It may not affect you now, but what about in 10 years? The woman in this documentary was only in her 60s, clinically obese and died from heart failure, a risk factor of obesity.

A team of pathologists performs an autopsy on a clinically obese donor to examine how excess fat damages the human body.

It's no wonder we're so confused as to what to eat. This shelf contains so many books with the word 'diet' in the title!
