Free specialist palliative care for people and their families, living with a terminal or life-limiting illness

We help people live well and with dignity and compassion at the end of life. Our holistic services are provided free of charge through an interdisciplinary team of specialist doctors, nurses, therapists, educators and specially trained volunteers. We provide care and support to people whenever and wherever they need it – at home, in our Inpatient Unit, at a Residential Care Facility, at Hutt Hospital, or in partnership with their GP. While our services are free to those in need, it does cost us to provide them. Every year we need to raise $4 million, which is 45% of our annual funding needs from our local community, with the balance being provided through our contracts with Te Whatu Ora Health NZ. Thank you to our generous community for ensuring patients, and their families and whānau, receive the essential care they need.

In palliative care, we help people live as well as they can, for as long as they can.

To give good care, we need to know what is important to the person — kena itovo vakavanua, nodra digidigi, and kena inakinaki.

This Fijian Language Week, we encourage families to talk about:

💬 Na mataqali qaravi vinaka cava ko via rawata? - What would good care look like for you?
💬 O cei ko via vakaitavi ena vakatulewa? - Who do you want involved in making decisions?

Start these conversations at home.

When we listen, care becomes more personal and more respectful.

Upper Hutt Hospice Shop – an update

Following consultation with our staff and volunteers, we have made the difficult decision to close our Upper Hutt Hospice Shop indefinitely from today while we undertake a comprehensive review of the store and our future retail presence in Upper Hutt.

This has not been an easy decision. We know how much the shop means to our customers, donors, volunteers and supporters, and we are incredibly grateful for the many years of support the Upper Hutt community has given Te Omanga Hospice.

Our review will be comprehensive, and will include looking at the future retail model, pricing, product mix, customer experience and how we can best maintain our connection with Upper Hutt. Importantly, we will engage with our volunteers, customers, donors and wider community as part of that work.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support. We will keep our community updated as the review progresses.
