There is always a reason behind what a horse does and it is never 'because I just don't want to' there will be a genuine reason behind the I don't want to or it may well be 'I can't'

Please listen to your horses, they are trying their best to communicate with you! 💚

MR T
This is the C4 cervical vertebra from Mr T, the horse featured in last week's dissection.

There is a significant amount of information available on Becks Nairn's Patreon page explaining the findings from this horse, including the detailed information behind this particular vertebra.

☆ For this post, I simply want to leave you with a thought.

If your horse struggles to flex its neck to one side, Don't assume it is being difficult.
Don't assume it is stubborn.
And please don't force the issue.

Horses that are tied head-to-tail, or pulled into stronger flexion, or repeatedly asked to work through restrictions they are clearly finding difficult.
Here may lie the reason.

Horses don't wake up in the morning and decide they don't want to bend their neck today. It's not stubbornness. It's not poor behaviour. It is resistance, yes - for a very good reason.

This cervical vertebra shows significant bony remodelling.

Use this photo as a reminder that when a horse cannot perform a movement comfortably, there may be a very real physical reason behind it.

When we use force to "work through" a problem without understanding why the resistance may exist and resort to force - you are part of the problem.

I bought my SportzVibe rug for Thumper many years before the start of my journey with Bowen Therapy, and although I dont use it nearly as much as I used to, I felt today was the right time to bring it back out and Thumpy certainly agreed 🥰

It's been a bit of a journey the last month and a half with the move, building the shed and everything we have had going on and I'm sure that my sensitive guy felt it too, so I'm glad we were able to slow down this morning and let out some pent up tension together 💚

What a beautiful crisp winters morning, the boys enjoyed a good grooming session whilst I got to hang out with them for more than 5min at feed times since we moved! 🥰

Just a quick read reinforcing that nothing works in isolation in a living body and how important it is to tune into your horse and not treat subtle communications from them as being naughty or needing more training... horses are master communicators, and it is our job to listen to what they are trying to tell us and then act upon it! 💚

✨️🎉 Today Marks 3 Weeks Since We Officially Sold Our Property and Moved Out To Our New Bare Block! 🎉✨️

We Sold our stunning property which had everything a horsey girl dreams of, to buy a bare block of land that had nothing except 3 very large paddocks, 3 troughs and a 1 pond!

We were fortunate enough that we had access to our bare block over summer so we got stuck into some earthworks over the Christmas break to put in the driveway and shed site, we then stumbled across our dream relocateable home 🏠😍 and got that sited earlier in the year too - although she is a biiiig job to restore her to her former glory we still love her! 🥰

So the last month or so has been a TOTAL whirlwind 🌪 we only had 2.5weeks to get packed up and moved out, which was mayhem but we got it done and then straight into building a shed for us to live in while we renovate the house! 😮‍💨

It's an exciting but slightly stressful journey but will be sooo worth it in the end! 🤩

Thanks so much to everyone that has assisted and helped us with the packing, the move and building our shed, we couldn't have done it without you all! 🥰

Don't stress we are still local to the Kaipara and Whangarei districts so my availability remains the same for all my clients 🤗

Keep an eye out as I am going to try to post regular updates of our journey! 👀

I love being able to make positive changes in horse's lives especially when they are going through something as hard as box rest 🥰

Another great body work session by Kayla at Epona Fields Equine 🙌🏽
24/7 confinement is pretty hard on a horses body, the lack of movement and decline in muscle strength is a real issue. Glad to say Reggie was starting to feel himself again after a solid treatment 💕 Thanks again Kayla!

Such A Great Visual! 👀
The body never works in isolation there are always many many interactions (nerves, tendons, ligaments, muscles, bones the all important Fascia and more!) happening throughout any movement no matter how big or small!

I am absolutely behind this post
Equine Dentistry is so much more than rasping down the sharp high points and balancing the mouth, it should also be about checking their WHOLE dental health and that includes the gums, interdental spaces (the area between two teeth), cheeks and more.

After my own experiences I am a firm believer that this is only possible via a Veterinary Dental carried out by experienced equine vets and we are So So Fortunate in Northland to have Yourvet YourVet - Equine who you can rest assured will provide an exceptionally thorough assessment and procedure but can also refer to a specialist equine veterinary dentist if larger concerns are found! 🤗

Injury and Illness in horses is a rather common occurrence yet it is not something that is routinely talked about. 🤔

Some of these reasons I believe is due to
🟢 Social/peer judgement
🟣 Feeling like you've failed your horse or not done 'enough'
🟢 Hiding the truth so there is no detriment to a horse's resale ability(this one upsets me abit - I believe in full disclosure)
🟣 Struggling with the injury or illness mentally yourself so you're just taking it day by day and talking to anyone in the horsey world (even your friend) may seem too hard

Yes you may have guessed by now, that I too have had my own struggles in terms of illness/injury with my own horses (and am currently dealing with this too), but I think that this is a total shame that the horse world works like this! 😢

The horse world should be one where we shouldn't feel the need to hide when things get tough, we should be able to talk about it (completely understandable if you have no desire to talk to others about it thats your prerogative 😉 ) but I do think that sometimes talking about it
🟢 Can reduce the mental/emotional load you are carrying
🟣 Can help educate others
🟢 Oddly enough it can also be something to bond over because as mentioned earlier it is more common than most of us realize!

I will be talking of my current journey in time (don't worry I'm not being a hypocrite! 🫣 ) but for the meantime a good friend of mine is currently going through a rather strict rehab journey with her gelding and she is documenting it over on her page Little Meadow Farms

And last week while I was out working on Reggie we put together a totally impromptu video for you guys to watch... definitely check it out if you're after a giggle 🤣 but in all seriousness do check it out. It has some good information in it but is a timely reminder that we all have our own struggles going on whether we choose to show it or not x

Take care out their guys and I am always hear if anyone need to chat! 💚🦄💜

A bit of a thought provoking read for your Sunday afternoon

When considering end of life decisions I want people to be realistic.

I often hear of people being guilt tripped by their own vets and other people when it comes to end of life decisions. Keep in mind that’s part of a vets job is to keep the horse alive…..the options for drugs and interventions are becoming more every year. A death is often seen as a failure and I think that’s something that needs to change. We are all on the planet for a blip of time, when you feel this weight…..zoom out to the bigger picture. We are born from Star dust and we will return to star dust. Horses don’t count their day in quantity but rather quality….Hell horses don’t count days at all! What I do know is that they are built to mask pain being a prey animal. I have seen horses whose kidneys are necrotic mush who died with a full stomach and mouthful of food…..that’s how strong their survival instincts are. I have seen black, yes black intestines in horses who died in pain because their human wanted to see another year.

Wild/feral horses average life span is 15 to 20 years, some populations are even younger depending on weather conditions and predators. The minute the horse slows down, it’s on the menu.

Domestic life has advantages for the horse but I feel in many ways it actually has less because of what we do the horse to suits our needs, not theirs. We segregate the horses in small stalls and label it luxury yet in humans we call this a prison cell. Movement is medicine yet we have convinced ourselves that stables are caring. Let me tell you, one time after a long haul flight and being restricted to my seat for a 17 hour flight I decided to go to the gym the following day. I got 15 mins into my work out before my hamstrings got the worst cramp I’ve ever experienced and I was in immense pain for two weeks after. Where are race horses always tight? Hamstrings. I had allot of sympathy for stabled performance horses after that. Movement is medicine, not just for one hour of the day.

There are so many fractures in equestrianism that are seeing daylight now and people are divided. Balance needs to be restored.
Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.

Two things I have noticed when horses are struggling, they either remove themselves from the herd or they attach themselves to another horse neurotically. Macular(eye) degeneration in older horses is very real and I see it allot, these horses also become spooky. If they lose weight over winter, it’s a sign their bodies not processing nutrients effectively. If they can’t stand to have their feet done comfortably. If they spend long periods of time in the paddock with their head down. If they can’t rest effectively, to fully rest they need a good stay apparatus or to lay down fully. These are all reasons to call time.

The horses I struggle to dissect the most are the ones who suffered silently, not the young horses who were put down humanely put down never to be forced to comply with human expectations. End of life choices are for the owner, the owners sees the slow decline.

******for the people triggered by my comments about vets at the beginning, it’s not ALL vets! This is not an ALL vets problem. I say it because it does happen, I hear about it often on my dissections. I say the same thing to them as I am saying here, find a realistic vet. Being a vet is hard, they are just people too with their own opinions and beliefs. This is not a vet bashing post, being a vet is a hard gig and I’m so grateful to vets.
