Have you ever heard of stretch therapy? If you’re looking for a total nervous system rest, a chance to decompress and do something really good for yourself, consider this a sign to give it a go. I recently spent an afternoon with Kimberly at Sheridan Stretch Therapy in Miramar, and I walked out feeling like someone had pressed the reset button on my entire body. I think everyone should try this!

If you've ever imagined stretch therapy to be painful or someone forcing your body into uncomfortable positions, think again. Studio owner Kimberly's approach is gentle, supportive and completely tailored to what your body needs. During my session I very happily zoned out and felt so relaxed the entire time.

Kimberly discovered Fascial Stretch Therapy after it transformed her own lower back pain and sciatica while she was living in the States. She trained alongside a stretch therapist and physiotherapist before eventually bringing Sheridan Stretch Therapy to Wellington four years ago. She's now been part of Miramar's thriving wellness community for the past three years!

After moving to Miramar in 2022 to be with her husband, Kimberly quickly fell in love with Wellington's close-knit community. She says building genuine connections with her clients has been one of the most rewarding parts of opening her studio, and starting working with locals (many of whom she now considers friends) is what helped her feel truly settled. To Kimberly, Miramar has such a supportive community where people genuinely want local businesses to succeed, and after meeting her, it's easy to see why she's become such a valued part of it.

Kimberly’s studio is warm and calming (there's even an electric blanket!), making it the perfect way to spend a colder afternoon doing something kind for yourself.

The benefits go far beyond simply improving flexibility. Stretch therapy helps decompress the body, ease tension, improve mobility and create more space throughout your muscles and fascia. Perfect for everyone including office workers used to sitting at a desk all day, older people struggling with mobility, athletes looking to make recovery smoother. I can see why so many people swear by it.

Alongside assisted stretch therapy, Kimberly also offers cupping and scraping treatments to help support recovery and mobility.

I couldn't recommend this experience more. Thank you so much Kim for this gifted session. If you've been curious, take this as your sign to give it a go. Your body will thank you.

S*x hormones affect fascia — in menopause but also throughout monthly cycles. Thicker, tighter, less elasticity in feet can mean higher chance of falling — and look at that contraceptive info!

Last week I could barely stand on my old broken foot—after sitting, I’d have to stand for about 30 seconds before I could even walk. This week, fine. Not in your head ladies! 🙂 fascinating fascia 🕸️

🔹>> The presence of relaxin receptor 1 (RXFP1) and estrogen receptor-alpha (ERa) in the deep fascia also change throughout an individual’s lifetime and is lower in the postmenopausal period with respect to the premenopausal one. These findings may explain some clinical differences detected in women of different age groups and why women tend to have different myofascial problems and myofascial pain after menopause. When Vita et al. analyzed the influence of hormonal changes on the deep fasciae during the menstrual cycle using ultrasound technology and shear wave elastography, they found statistically significant differences between the users and nonusers of hormonal contraceptives: the thoracolumbar fascia was thicker in the nonusers (p = 0.011), and the nonusers had higher maximal and mean stiffnesses of the
fascia lata (p = 0.01 and 0.0095, respectively).
Petrofsky and Lee also demonstrated that plantar fascia elasticity modifications during the menstrual cycle can affect posture sway and tremor and lead to the potential risk of falling.

🔹Why are the large majority of clients tighter on their left side? 🔹

“If someone can write extensively on the right vs left hand/side of our bodies, then it is obvious that there can be many possible reasons if not outright causes of asymmetry in the body in general, and why you may observe one-sided tightness in particular.

Naturally, there is a difference between actual asymmetrical head-to-toe “tightness” vs seeing say, a majority of clients with left side low back and hip tighter than right. In that example, many who are right leg dominant rely more on their left side for stability and right side more for mobility during functional activities. This will often result in greater left sided tightness that you may be observing.”
- Ann Frederick, creator of FST

In short - we all have asymmetries, sometimes due to injuries, surgeries, sports, but even just our natural patterns— so the right handed will often have a tighter left leg! 🤓 another common example: a person might do fine motor skills with right hand and hold a baby with left arm.
