One of my favourite things about helping people move better is when people realise movement can feel easier.
And one of my favourite places to start is… getting out of a chair.
Because most people don’t actually stand up. They heave or launch themselves up!
They hold their breath.
Push with their hands
Load through their knees.
Try to “lift” themselves upright.
And often accompanied by inadvertent “oof”, “ugh” sound effects.
But when we slow it down and explore it differently, something amazing happens.
Breathing softens. Folding happens at the hips. Weight transfers easily and suddenly instead of heaving yourself upright with effort and discomfort… it flows.
That little look of surprise when someone says “Oh! My knees didn't hurt when I got up!" or Wow, that actually felt easy” never gets old 😀
