One of my favourite things about helping people move better is when people realise movement can feel easier.

And one of my favourite places to start is… getting out of a chair.

Because most people don’t actually stand up. They heave or launch themselves up!

They hold their breath.
Push with their hands
Load through their knees.
Try to “lift” themselves upright.

And often accompanied by inadvertent “oof”, “ugh” sound effects.

But when we slow it down and explore it differently, something amazing happens.

Breathing softens. Folding happens at the hips. Weight transfers easily and suddenly instead of heaving yourself upright with effort and discomfort… it flows.

That little look of surprise when someone says “Oh! My knees didn't hurt when I got up!" or Wow, that actually felt easy” never gets old 😀

Today marks the birthday of Moshe Feldenkrais - a physicist, engineer, judo black belt… and someone who completely changed how we understand movement and learning.

A few things that make him worth knowing about:
✨️ He rebuilt his own ability to walk when knee surgery wasn’t a sure thing
✨️ He was one of the first to connect neuroscience with movement (before it was trendy)
✨️ He believed how you move affects how you think, feel and experience life

But here’s the bit I keep coming back to:

He didn’t create a system of exercises.
He created a way of paying attention.

Less forcing.
More sensing.
Less “fixing” yourself.
More understanding how you actually work.

It turns out, when your brain gets better information… your body makes better choices.

And when you move better, you feel better.

Feels like a pretty good way to celebrate a birthday to me.

So… what’s actually happening in a “Not Yoga” class?

Mindful, slow movements that quiet the noise in your system and help your body shift out of tension into mobility and calm.

You leave feeling better, lighter and more like you.

Curious? Come experience it for yourself.

Two days. Eight lessons. 55+ curious humans. Four teachers. One shared love of moving, sensing and discovering what’s possible.

So great to teach at the Wellington Feldenkrais Intensive at Te Whaea Dance School over the weekend. It was a proper deep dive into embodied movement exploration and done in a way that feels like a retreat-style event.

Grateful for the people, the process and those little “ohhh that’s different”, "that was amazing ", "I've never noticed that before" moments that unfolded during the weekend. ✨

Thanks to the organisers, my fellow teachers, practitioners and of course the wonderful attendees who carved out the time for themselves for two whole days.

Got the most beautiful “just because” flowers from a client today. No reason. No occasion. Just… kindness. 💐🌸

It’s given me a little smile every time I walk past them.

Love the happy colours and the quiet reminder that even when the world feels a bit loud and messy, there are still lots of these small, good moments.

So here’s your nudge (and mine) to notice them.

Longinquity (noun) — the state of being far away, either in distance or time.

It’s one of those deliciously old-fashioned words that sounds exactly like what it means. Long. Far. Distant. A sense of something stretched out across space or years.

Which feels rather appropriate… because there’s been a little longinquity between me and social media lately. I’ve been enjoying a bit of distance from the scroll.

But the longinquity is over. I’m back.

So expect more words, musings, movement thoughts and the occasional curious rabbit hole coming your way soon.

Stay tuned 😉

What if moving your body felt… kind?

Not forced. Not pushed. Not performed. Just easeful and good.

Learning to love how you move doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time, curiosity and a nervous system that feels safe enough to explore. That’s where Feldenkrais comes in. Gently training both body and brain to find easier, more efficient, more enjoyable ways of moving and being.

The new term of Feldenkrais "Not Yoga" classes kicks off next week and I’d love you to join me.

No stretching straps, no fancy poses, no “shoulds.”

Just thoughtful movement that meets you where you are.
