Nelson Bays Primary Health is proud to support Hauora 2036, General Practice New Zealand’s vision for a healthier future for Aotearoa New Zealand. The document calls for a health system that is equitable, community-focused, prevention-based, and designed to deliver better outcomes for everyone. https://gpnz.org.nz/election26/

We support the focus on strengthening primary and community care, investing in the health workforce, improving access to services, and making better use of technology to deliver care closer to home.

Creating a sustainable health system will take long-term commitment, collaboration, and investment. We look forward to working alongside our communities and colleagues across the sector to help make this vision a reality.

GPNZ's vision Hauora 2036 – Building the health system we need together brings together priorities across primary care and sets a clear direction for the next government.

Whānau have shared their stories and experiences. Now it's our responsibility to listen.

NBPH acknowledges the release of Whānau Voice 2.0, a report from Te Kāhui Hauora that brings together the voices of 584 whānau Māori from across Te Tauihu.

The report highlights what matters most to whānau: affordable and timely healthcare, trusted relationships, culturally safe services, easier navigation of the health system, and support before issues reach crisis point.

A powerful message from the report says:

"Equity may not always be experienced as receiving more, but as being left to carry less."

We thank everyone who contributed their kōrero and acknowledge the important work of Te Kāhui Hauora in ensuring the voices of whānau continue to inform health planning, investment and decision-making across our region.

A significant moment for Te Tauihu.

Nelson Bays Primary Health acknowledges the passing of the Te Here-ā-Nuku (Nelson Tenths) Bill through its third reading in Parliament. This milestone marks an important step towards resolving a long-standing historical grievance and recognising the rights of the descendants of the original Nelson Tenths owners.

We acknowledge Te Here-ā-Nuku Trust, Ngā Uri, kaumātua, whānau and the many people who have worked over generations to reach this point. We recognise the importance of this moment for our region and the opportunities it creates for future generations.

Congratulations on this historic achievement.

General practice is about so much more than treating illness. Through your local GP team, a wide range of services are available to support physical health, mental wellbeing, healthy lifestyles, long-term condition management, falls prevention, advance care planning, and navigating the health system. Across Nelson Tasman, these services help people and whānau access the right support at the right time, close to home. If you're unsure what help may be available, start by talking with your general practice team. You may be surprised by just how much support is available beyond a routine GP appointment.

Nelson Bays Primary Health welcomes the Government's announcement that Nelson has been selected as one of three locations to establish a new Youth Hub, aimed at improving access to mental health and addiction support for young people aged 16 to 25.

As a primary health organisation committed to improving health and wellbeing outcomes across our region, Nelson Bays Primary Health supports initiatives that enhance access to integrated, person-centred care for young people.

The investment recognises the importance of providing timely, accessible and coordinated support during a critical stage of life. By bringing services together in one place, Youth Hubs have the potential to reduce barriers to care and improve pathways to counselling, peer support and specialist mental health services.
We are encouraged to see a strong focus on involving young people in the design of these services, helping to ensure support is responsive to their needs and experiences.

This is a positive development for the Nelson Tasman region and an important step towards strengthening mental health and wellbeing outcomes for our rangatahi and their whānau.

Congratulations to all those involved in advocating for and progressing this initiative. We look forward to seeing the impact the Nelson Youth Hub will have across our community.

Building the future health workforce in Te Tauihu

Last week, Nelson Bays Primary Health welcomed representatives from the University of Waikato to Te Tauihu as part of the proposed New Zealand Graduate School of Medicine programme. The visit brought together iwi, health sector, local government and community leaders to explore how medical education and training could be delivered within our region.

By training future doctors closer to the communities they will serve, we have an opportunity to strengthen our local workforce, support equitable health outcomes, and create lasting benefits for Te Tauihu.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to this important kōrero.

🌱 Look Forward | Te Whakamua

Matariki marks the beginning of a new year – a time to look ahead with hope and intention.
Just as a seedling grows with care and attention, our wellbeing grows through the small steps we take each day.

This Matariki, consider:

- Moving your body more
- Reconnecting with whānau and friends
- Prioritising your mental wellbeing
- Booking that health check you've been putting off

You don't need to change everything at once. Small actions can grow into meaningful change over time.

As we celebrate Matariki Herenga Waka – For Everyone, let's look ahead to a future where our communities, whānau and tamariki can thrive.

🌱 What is one thing you could do for your wellbeing this year?

Mā tātou katoa e hanga he anamata pai ake.
Together we build a better future.

💚 Restore | Te Hauora Hinengaro me te Wairua

Matariki arrives in the heart of winter – a season that encourages us to slow down, reflect and restore.

In a world that often feels busy, taking time to care for our hinengaro (mind) and wairua (spirit) is an important part of our wellbeing.

This Matariki, consider making space to:

- Get enough rest
- Spend time in nature
- Do things that bring you joy
- Take a break when you need it

Looking after ourselves helps us show up for our whānau, friends and communities.

As we celebrate Matariki Herenga Waka – For Everyone, let's remember that wellbeing isn't always about doing more. Sometimes it's about pausing, reconnecting with what matters, and giving ourselves permission to recharge.

✨ Looking after yourself helps you look after others.

💙 Reflect | Te Tirohanga Whakamuri

Matariki is a time to pause and look back on the year that has been.
It is an opportunity to honour those who have passed, acknowledge the experiences that have shaped us, and recognise the people who have supported us along the way.

Reflection is an important part of our wellbeing. Taking time to appreciate how far we have come can help us move into the new year with gratitude, perspective and hope.

As we celebrate Matariki, consider:

- What are you grateful for?
- What challenges have you overcome?
- Who has helped you on your journey?
- What lessons will you carry forward?

Take a moment to reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and look ahead to the future.

Kō ōu whetū, ōu ara.
Your stars, your journey.🌟
